Activity #5

Name: APUNTAR, RENCH JUBEN M.

Course: BS MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING
Year/Section: MEXE 3101
Date: SEPTEMBER 30, 2020

Instructions: Write your answer after each question.

1. Name three materials from which straightedges are made.

High-quality steel, cast iron and steel or granite are the materials used to
make straightedges. The high-quality steel is hardened and suitably stabilized
having the work edge ground na lapped to a knife edge. This is called the
toolmaker’s straightedges because it views against a well-illuminated
background. Cast iron, otherwise, makes straightedges free from blow holes and
porosity. And steel or granite are materials used for rectangular or I-section
straightedges.

2. What is meant by tolerance?

Tolerance is the algebraic difference between the upper and lower

deviation or simply the difference between the maximum limit sizes and the
maximum limit sizes.

3. A 200 mm sine bar is used to check an angle of 30° 12ʹ. Calculate the size of
gauge blocks necessary. (ans. 100.604 mm).

sin= HL
H = Lsin

H = [200mm] [sin (30° 12ʹ)]

H = 100.604mm

4. By means of a sketch show the GO and NOT GO arrangement of a taper plug

gauge.
4. State two recognized uses of gauge blocks.

Gauge blocks are used for precise measurements where accurate work
sizes are required. Also, they are used as standards of length used with high
magnification comparators to establish the sizes of gauge blocks in general use.
6. Name three types of square used in industry.

The three types of squares are cylindrical squares, solid-form block

squares and engineer’s try squares. They are made with different sizes and
edges materials, mostly granite, which are chosen depending on the type and
size of the workpiece to be measured.

7. State the reason why standards are necessary in industry.

Standards are a way of communicating. They serve as a kind of language

in the form of technical communication. Also, standards provide a basis for all
industrial activities. It covers everything from the smallest piece of tool to the
most complex networks. Having standards ensure the consistency, compatibility,
safety, and effectiveness of the materials. It is very crucial in regulating and
facilitating the industry. In fact, it affects nearly all products and materials we
use in our everyday lives.

8. At what temperature are gauge blocks calibrated and intended for use?

Gauge blocks are calibrated and intended for use at 20° Celsius or 68°
Fahrenheit. When taking measurements, they need to be kept at this
temperature accurately. At this temperature, thermal expansion that causes
errors can be mitigated.
