Caution ...

Corrosives are chemical substances

(e.g.,hydrofluoric acid) often highly acidic or

Corrosives
alkaline that can cause damage when in contact
with living tissue. Certain corrosives, such as
potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, may
also have a gradual destructive effect on metal,
LOSS PREVENTION SAFETY LETTER alloy, or combustible materials.

When in contact with the skin, most corrosive substances will produce chemical burns
while others, such as chromic acid, will produce deep ulcerations. It is important,
therefore, to know and follow important safety precautions when working with
corrosives.

• Read the label. As with any class of chemical, it is imperative that you read the label on the
container. The label will warn you if the substance is corrosive, flammable, toxic, or reactive
with other chemicals.

• Consult the relevant Chemical Hazard Bulletin (CHB) and Material Safety Data Sheet
(MSDS). They will warn you about the hazards of the particular chemical, and provide
information on how to protect yourself from its hazards and what first aid measures to take.

• Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Protect your eyes and face
with appropriate eyewear, such as goggles and a faceshield. For protection against inhaling
corrosive gas or mist, wear an appropriate and properly fitted respirator. Eye and face
protection, gloves, clothing, and footwear should be made of the appropriate material needed
to provide protection.

• Provide adequate ventilation. Make sure that the area is well ventilated. Alternatively, wear
a respirator.

• Keep containers closed. Make sure that all containers holding corrosive substances are kept
closed when not in use.

• Store corrosives properly. Store corrosives according to the instructions found in the
relevant CHB and MSDS. Make sure that you do not place corrosive substances near reactive
materials.

• Wash well after working with corrosives. Follow the guidelines and procedures for the
proper cleaning and disposing of PPE. Do not remove PPE with your bare hands, and keep
personal and work clothing separate. PPE must be cleaned after each use and checked for
signs of wear and tear.

• Rinse with water for at least 15 minutes. If any part of your body gets exposed to a
corrosive substance, call for medical attention and follow any first aid instructions noted in the
relevant CHB and MSDS.

Using Solvents Solvents are very useful substances found
Safely throughout the oil and gas industry. They are
used to dissolve other materials. Exposure to
solvents, however, can pose a potential threat to
LOSS PREVENTION SAFETY LETTER your health and safety.

Solvents include common chemicals, such as paint thinners and industrial cleaners. As most
solvents are combustible, often highly volatile and flammable, you need to recognize and control
their hazards. Solvents can spill or leak, releasing vapors that can catch fire or explode. Follow
these precautions and emergency actions when working with solvents:

• Be familiar with the chemicals that you work with. Learn the specific hazards of each chemical by reading
the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and Chemical Hazard Bulletin (CHB).

• Whenever possible, substitute safer solvents for dangerous ones to reduce the associated hazards. For

example, when possible, substitute a solvent containing benzene with a water-based solvent.

• Only use solvents in areas with good ventilation, to minimize your exposure to fumes.

• Use respiratory protection in areas of poor ventilation and where high exposure is possible. A respirator

should only be used temporarily, until permanent exhaust ventilation is installed.

• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, boots, aprons or coveralls, and eye
protection to prevent skin irritation, contact with eyes, and absorption of the solvent through the skin.

• Use enclosed systems, such as covering open dip tanks or vats when not in use, to prevent leakage and

spillage and to collect the solvent in the event of a leak or spill.

• Know where to find and how to use the safety showers and emergency eyewash stations in your workplace,

in case you are splashed with a solvent. Remember to rinse the affected area for 15 minutes, and call for
medical help immediately.

• In case you inhale solvent fumes, get to fresh air and call for medical assistance immediately.

If your job requires that you handle solvents, make sure that you receive appropriate training relating

to the hazardous and toxic effects of the solvents that you use. The key to maintaining a safe and

healthy workplace when handling solvents is minimizing or eliminating your exposure to them.
