Sen. Jose W.

Diokno’s letter to his eldest son, Jose Ramon

Reaction paper:

A series of questions kept boggling my mind after reading and reflecting the letter of Sen. Jose
W. Diokno’s to his eldest son, Jose Ramon. The question whether or not to continue chasing my dream
to be a member of IBP and a question of asking myself how certain and determine I am in pursuit of this
dream? Am I ready to the demands of being a law student like embracing the changes of my daily
routine, handling the pressures by the completion and deadline of assignment, and the willingness to let
go the leisure time? And, is it worth studying law?

The rampant Injustices and prejudices made me pursue the law school. "There is no law when
society is ruled, not by reason, but by will—worse, by the will of one man." This words of the great
senator Diokno reminds me of Injustice that happened to the case of transgender Jennifer Laude. His
family deprived to get the justice they deserved. U.S Lance corporal Pemberton was bestowed an
absolute pardon by the President without the application of Pemberton. Where is the due process?
What happened to the law of the land? He was released as if nothing happened. The letter of Sen.
Diokno is very timely and encouraged me to pursue the study of law and fight those ‘will of one man’ in
accordance to the law.

The inevitable changes, pressures, and sacrifices helped me examine my desire and
determination to whether or not I am able to cope the challenging demands. In order to deal with these
demands is by embracing it.

Is it worth studying law? Yes. It is worth. Who will defend me and my family? Who will defend
the low less against the oppressor? Who will fight the freedom, truth and justice? It is timely and worthy
to study law. It is a must to study law not just for the chase of my dream, rather to know and uphold the
democracy and freedom that myself must enjoined. The same democracy and freedom my forefathers
fought for in accordance with the law.
