Transitional Words and Phrases bring coherence to a paragraph by linking the idea in one sentence with
that in the next sentence.  They accomplish this linkage through revealing the relationship between the
ideas.  They often signal the reader to remember what has been said or to look forward to new ideas.
With transitions, prose may achieve a smooth flow of thought; without transitions, it may degenerate into
jerkiness and choppiness.  The following table groups some common transitional expressions according
to type of relationship.

Pronouns

Pronouns bring coherence to a paragraph in two main ways.  First, they make for smoother reading by
removing the awkward repetition of nouns.  Second, they form connections between sections of a
paragraph by referring to a noun in a preceding sentence or sentence part.  So when a writer uses
pronouns that clearly refer to nouns or other pronouns, he or she builds strong bridges from one sentence
to the next.

Repetition of Key Words and Phrases

Strategic use of repetition can achieve coherence, especially the repetition of a key word.  A key word is
one related to the topic sentence of the paragraph.  It is only natural that a good writer should want to
repeat a word or phrase associated with the primary idea of the paragraph, since the paragraph develops
the topic sentence.

Paragraph Unity

Unity refers to whether or not the text is on topic. Having unity is important at both the paragraph level
and the essay level. A paragraph is unified when all of its sentences work towards the same end. Each
phrase and sentence should illustrate, clarify, explain, support and/or address the idea that the topic
sentence puts forward. An essay is unified when all of the paragraphs illustrate, clarify, explain, support
and/or address the idea expressed in the essay's thesis statement.

There may, of course, be more than one idea in a paragraph or an essay, but all are focused on one overall
theme.

Example of a Unified Paragraph:

"An attempt to address this issue by encouraging captive breeding programs has also met with difficulties.
Firstly, despite modern technology and research, many species are still reluctant to breed in artificial
surroundings. In the rare breeds, this creates a vicious downward spiral as wild birds are caught to start
breeding programs, but viable populations cannot be maintained. Secondly, captive populations are finite
units, and careful management of breeding stock is necessary to prevent weakening the genetic base. This
level of dedication and expertise, however, requires a great deal of money--something most of us cannot
access and relevant institutions are reduced to begging for."

Example of a Disunified Paragraph:

"Horror films have made an impressive comeback with young movie goers in the 1990s. Sequels to new
films like the Scream and I know What You Did Last Summer have already hit the screens with much
success, headlined with youthful stars from popular television shows. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and
Jennifer Love Hewitt have all parlayed their TV celebrity into Scream Queen status. Hollywood is taking
advantage of resurgence of interest by remaking several old horror films as well. In 1998, a remake of
Psycho introduced a new generation to the amazing film capabilities of Alfred Hitchcock. Another sequel
causing excitement is George Lucas' "prequel" to the Star Wars saga."

Paragraph Coherence

A paragraph is coherent when it flows smoothly in a clear direction and when all the sentences are
logically arranged.

There are several ways to undermine paragraph coherence:

1. Using too many short, choppy sentences.

2. Organizing your sentences in an illogical sequence.
3. Using weak transitions that fail to suit your purposes, or not using transitions at all.

Example of Incoherent Paragraph:

Canadian software companies face several tough challenges in the new millennium because of "brain
drain," the weak Canadian dollar, and the monopoly held by their American counterparts. However, the
Canadian dollar continues its downward spiral even today. "Brain drain" is a bad thing. Our greatest
resources are leaving. Microsoft is squeezing out its competitors. In comparison, if the "brain drain"
continues, Canadian companies will find it difficult to produce innovative software. The weak dollar will
hurt us. It will help the Americans.

[The paragraph above is incoherent because it uses choppy sentences ineffectively, it arranges the ideas
illogically, and it uses transition words in improper contexts.]

Example of a Coherent Paragraph:

Canadian software companies face several tough challenges in the new millenium because of "brain
drain," the weak Canadian dollar, and the monopoly held by American corporations. "Brain drain" is a
catchy new term for the practice of American companies enticing brilliant Canadian doctors, scientists,
researchers, programmers, and business people to cross over the border into the United States. The U.S.
firms lure the Canadian talent with the strong American dollar and the competitive research and business
edge that many such companies have as a result of industry monopolies. Simply put, Canadian companies
are being soundly beaten because they find themselves on a playing field that is no longer level.

narrative writing
Narrative writing appears in and is not limited to novels, short stories, biographies, autobiographies,
historical accounts, essays, poems, and plays.

narrative reports

Its a way of writing a report by writing it in paragraph form just as the event happened, as opposed to
filling in the blanks reports or a SOAP note report, where you use a prescribed method of writing the
report I.e. subjective, objective, assessment and progress.

Parts of narrative report

 Exposition / Introduction
 Rising Action
 Climax
 Falling Action
 End

What is Narrative Writing?

Creative writing is known as narrative writing. A narrative writer writes to entertain the reader. Therefore
a fully developed narrative fiction or nonfiction should have a central theme that has to be introduced in
the beginning, followed by the development of the theme and an eventful middle and a memorable end.

Types of Narrative Writing

The three main types of narrative writings are personal, imaginative and narrative essay.

 Personal Narrative
The narrative writing is known as personal narrative when a person writes about himself or about his
experiences. In this style of narrative writing, the writer already has a plot. However, he has to narrate the
experiences in such a way that it will capture the interest of the reader. A personal narrative writer has to
pay attention to the flow of story; the dialogue (if any) and he should also include the description
wherever necessary. On reading, the reader should experience the same feeling that the writer experienced
in reality.

 Imaginative Narrative Writing

When a narrative writer writes a fiction or creates a story it is known as imaginative narrative writing. For
an imaginative narrative writer, creativity is a must. Here the narrative writer can go beyond the reality.
He can create unusual situations and events that could never happen in real life. Here the writer has to
create a plot and make it sound convincing to the reader.

 Narrative Essay

Narrative essays are always written from a defined point of view. The point of view would be none other
than that of the author’s. The narrative essay should have a central theme and points to support and
elaborate the theme. A narrative essay includes vivid verbs and modifiers and is very precise in
description of the characters. The narrative essays may or may not use dialogs. However, it can use
conflicts and sequences like any story.
