Complete after watching Module 32: Estimating the Endurance Limit

Module 32 Example: Endurance Limit

The rotating shaft below is in fully reversed bending. It is simply supported

by bearings at R1 and R2. The fillet radii at all points is r = 0.1 in. The shaft
is machined, with surface conditions a = 1.34 ksi and b = -0.085. A
reliability of 99.99% is required for this design. The shaft is made out of
5Cr-Mo-V Aircraft Steel, with an Sut = 240 ksi. and will be operating at 600
degrees F. What is the fully adjusted endurance strength?

Assumptions:
Isotropic, homogenous, axial centric load, neglecting weight of bar.

Known:
Machined with a = 1.34 ksi, b = -0.085, axial loading, operating temperature = 600 F, reliability = 99.99%,
Sut = 240 ksi

Analysis:
Estimate Se’ based off of Sut > 200 ksi, Se’ = 100 ksi

ka=aSutb= (1.34)(240)-0.085= 0.84

kb = 0.879(1)^-0.107 = 0.879 (since it is a rotating cylinder with 0.11<d<2 in)

kc = 1 (bending)

kd= 0.86 (from graph)

ke = 0.702

kf = 1 (no miscellaneous effects)

Se = ka kb kc kd ke kf Se’

Se = (0.84)*(0.879)*(1)*(0.86)*(0.702)*(1)*(100) = 44.6 ksi
