BASICS
Some repetition to explain why water mist standardization
is so different than sprinkler / gas standardization

Marioff company presentation

WATER MIST
A water spray for which the Dv0.99, for the flow –weighted cumulative volumetric
distribution of water droplets,
droplets is less than 1000 microns at the minimum design
operating pressure of the water mist nozzle

Marioff company presentation

HOW MUCH IS ONE LITER OF WATER

Droplet size Number of Surface area

(mm) droplets (m2)

10 1 900 0.6

1 1 900 000 6

01
0.1 1 900 000 000 60

0.01 1 900 000 000 000 600

0.1 x 1000 x 10 x

Marioff company presentation

FACTORS AFFECTING THE SUPPRESSION
EFFICIENCY OF WATER MIST
- Drop size distribution
- Penetration
P t ti
- Mass flow rate

WATER MIST IS NOT A GENERIC EXTINGUISHANT !

High pressure water mist of manufacturer A is not the same as
high
g ppressure water mist of manufacturer B

Marioff company presentation

PERFORMANCE-BASED APPROACH
ALL critical water mist system design and installation parameters
are defined in full-scale fire tests
- Nozzle type
- Operating pressure
- Spacing
- Installation height
- Flow rate
- Protection volume

Marioff has done

thousands of full
scale fire tests

WATER MIST STANDARDS

Marioff company presentation

1.1* Scope.
This standard contains the minimum
requirements for the design
design,
installation, maintenance, and
testing of water mist fire protection
systems This standard does not
systems.
provide definitive fire performance
criteria, nor does it offer specific
guidance on how to design a
system to control, suppress, or
extinguish a fire. Reliance is placed
on the procurement and installation
of listed water mist equipment or
systems that have demonstrated
performance in fire tests as p
p part of a
listing process.

ae s
In the absence of a generalized design method,
it is the intent of this document that
watermist systems are full-scale
full scale fire tested
and its system component evaluations are
conducted by qualified testing laboratories.
The full system acceptance requires the
relevant fire test report, the component test
report(s) as well as manufacturer’s design,
installation, operation and maintenance
manual for the application.
