TABLE A.20.4.3 Continued
20.4.3.1 A Class III commodity shall be defined as a product fashioned from wood, paper,
natural fibers, or Group C plastics with or without cartons, boxes, or crates and with or without
pallets.
For the 2016 edition, the Technical Committee on Sprinkler System Discharge revised the requirements
now in 20.4.3 to clarify the guidelines for Class III commodities. The requirement in 20.4.3.2 was modified
to clarify (1) that the percentages of plastic were equal to or less than 5; (2) the indicated values for weight
applied to unexpanded Group A plastic; and (3) the indicated values for volume applied to expanded
Group A plastic. Paragraph 20.4.3.3, along with Figure 20.4.3.3(a) and Figure 20.4.3.3(b), were added to
clarify how to classify commodities as Class III, Class IV, or Group A plastics when a mix of both unexpanded
and expanded Group A plastics are present as part of the overall product, depending on whether the com-
modity is cartoned [Figure 20.4.3.3(a)] or exposed [Figure 20.4.3.3(b)].
20.4.3.2 A Class III commodity shall be permitted to contain a limited amount (5 percent or
less by weight of nonexpanded plastic or 5 percent or less by volume of expanded plastic)
of Group A or Group B plastics.
