MARKING ON BOXES
 Bulk vs. non bulk
 Bulk Non –Bulk
 Liquid Liquid
 (> 450 L or 119 gal) (≤450 L or 119 gal)
 Solid Solid
 (>400 kg and capacity>450 L) ( ≤400 kg and capacity 450L)
 Gas Gas
 (water capacity >454 Kg or 1000lbs) (water capacity ≤454 Kg or 1000lbs)

HOW TO ASSIGN PACKING GROUP

 Dangerous goods are assigned into 3 packing
groups (also known as UN Packing Group) in
accordance with the degree of danger they
present:
 Packing Group I: high danger
 Packing Group II: medium danger
 Packing Group III: low danger

9
MARKING ON BOXES
Second Set of Manufacturer’s Markings

Performance Level Specific Gravity

X=Meets PG I, II and III tests • Weight of a liquid compared to
Y=Meets PG II and III tests weight of water
• For packages intended to hold
Z=Meets PG III tests
liquids without inner containers

OR

Gross Weight (Kilograms)

• 1 lb = 0.454 kg
• For packages intended to hold solids
or inner containers
Examples:
1A1/Y1.8 is rated for Packing Groups II or III liquids with a specific gravity up to 1.8
1H2/X100 is rated for Packing Groups I, II or III solids up to 100 kg in weight
