Inspired by Rizal’s literary genius, I tried to write poems that wouldn’t change a nation
but I think this is a good start. I wrote about the darkness of the night in the first sonnet and in
the second one, I wrote about peeling potatoes. These are both petrarchan sonnets with the
second one being a parody of the famous sonnet 43 of Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

I go on a delirium whenever it is night.
I always see things I know i shouldn’t see.
When I try to tell it, they’ll say it’s just me.
Although in my heart, I know they are not right.
I try to think that I’m all right,
until I saw a white man standing before me.
Though I know how things would be,
I still hoped that someone would fight this wight.
As I was about to cry, I saw my Mom.
She defended me against the night and the darkness of it.
For the final time, I cursed the night and the nights to come.
And my fear of the night was gone. I admit.
I now love the night although I feared it before.
The blackness of the night is now what I adore.
