Recognition & value Magnetic coins


Introduction/ Explicit Teaching (10 mins) Coins
Lesson 1 Who am I – I will ask a variety of open and closed and flip questions. Students will Student workbooks

50 mins - Flip: Guess my coin is a game where students can ask questions about coins What coin am I sheet
to find out what the hidden coin in your hand is. Encourage students to ask
about the features of the coins initially rather than whether it is the coin of
specific value.

- Eliminate the coin – take it away from the board when showing.
- Have magnetic coins

Closed questions:
I am thinking of the silver coin with the platypus, which coin is that?
My coin does not have round sides. Which coin is that?
I am thinking of a gold coin that is worth the most? Which coin is that?

Open Questions:
My coin is silver. Which coin might it be?
My coin is worth more than 50 cents. Which coin may it be?
My coin does not have an animal on it. Which might it be?
I paid 15 cents for lolly. Which coins might I have used?

Flip questions:
Guess my coin is a game where students can ask questions about coins to find out
what the hidden coin in your hand is. Encourage students to ask about the features of
the coins initially rather than whether it is the coin of specific value.
Eg. Is gold/silver, is it round, is it smaller than a 20c
Record on board or with their own coins.

Student Focus (20 minutes)


Students will physically pick 3 coins. They will write down the features into
questions (I am gold, round, etc). They will then ask the questions to a friend. The
friend will try and guess the coin. Change partners.
- Have fake money coins

Reflection (5 mins)
At the end of the activity get 5 students to share there’s to the class.

Task card:
Money: Coins
AC: Recognise, describe and order Australian coins according to their value.
LI: We are learning to recognise and identify the value of Australian coins.
SC: Distinguish specific coins by their features and be able to order coins by value.
