READING ASSIGNMENT 1

Getting Ready to Read


• One job of sociologists is to observe how individuals
belong to various groups of people. Two of these groups
of people are racial and ethnic minorities.
• Race is based on “Physical differences among people”.
• Ethnicity is based on “cultural factors”
Look at the pictures on the page 2 of the
textbook and think and write about how you
would group these individuals.

Write your opinion about the following questions related to
the pictures on page 2.

• 1. When you looked at the pictures, what kinds of differences did you notice?
• 2. What kinds of similarities did you find?
• 3. It is mentioned above that race is based on “physical differences among the
people” while ethnicity is based on “cultural factors.” How would you define the
terms race and ethnicity in your own words? How are they different from one
another?
• 4. Which groups of people shown in the pictures are of the same race, but from
different ethnic groups?

Previewing
Becoming a good reader means acquiring the
skill that effective readers have.
- To read selections more than one time
- Every time you read a selection, read for a
different purposes
- Look for an overview of the topic, do not
read it line by line.
- Try to understand the general subject area
and main idea.
Using a prereading strategy

Reading for a Purpose

Scanning
Scanning is a skill that readers use to find specific
information quickly. When readers scan, they look for
the keywords or parts of the text that stand out.
Readers want to find out the key information for a
specific purpose. Sometimes readers just want to find
a telephone number, for example, and thus they look
in a telephone book for just one number.
Exercise 7 (page 12) Scanning for supportive evidence
Practice scanning to find numbers, words, or phrases that support
the main ideas of the passage. Scan Reading Selection 2 to find
these indicators of supporting evidence. Write the paragraph
number where the indicators can be found.
