1. Solve the following differential equations using Laplace Transform if all initial conditions are
zero. (show all steps)

𝑑2 𝑦 𝑑𝑦
+ 12 + 32𝑦 = 32 𝑢(𝑡)
𝑑𝑡 2 𝑑𝑡

Solution:
Substitute the corresponding F(s) for each term using the Tables and the initial conditions of y(t)
and dy(t)/d(t) given by 𝑦(0− ) = 0 and 𝑦̇ (0− ) = 0, respectively. Hence:
32
𝑠 2 𝑌(𝑠) + 12𝑠𝑌(𝑠) + 32𝑌(𝑠) =
𝑠
Solving for the response, Y(s), yields:
32 32
𝑌(𝑠) = =
𝑠(𝑠 2 + 12𝑠 + 32) 𝑠(𝑠 + 4)(𝑠 + 8)
Then, we form the partial fraction expansion of the right hand term and match each of the resulting
terms with F(s). Therefore:
32 𝐾1 𝐾2 𝐾3
𝑌(𝑠) = = + +
𝑠(𝑠 + 4)(𝑠 + 8) 𝑠 𝑠+4 𝑠+8
Where:
32
𝐾1 = | =1
(𝑠 + 4)(𝑠 + 8) 𝑠→0
32
𝐾2 = | = −2
𝑠(𝑠 + 8) 𝑠→−4
32
𝐾1 = | =1
𝑠(𝑠 + 4) 𝑠→−8
Hence:
1 2 1
𝑌(𝑠) = − +
𝑠 𝑠+4 𝑠+8
Therefore, according to the laplace tables, we have:
𝑦(𝑡) = (1 − 2𝑒 −4𝑡 + 𝑒 −8𝑡 )𝑢(𝑡)

2. Solve the following differential equation using Laplace Transform and the given initial
conditions of y(0) = 1, 𝑦 ′ (0) = 0 . (show all steps)

𝑑2𝑦 𝑑𝑦
+ 4 + 3𝑦 = 2𝑢(𝑡)
𝑑𝑡 2 𝑑𝑡

Solution:
The Laplace transform yields:

1
[𝑠 2 𝑌(𝑠) − 𝑠𝑦(0) − 𝑦 ′ (0)] + 4[𝑠𝑌(𝑠) − 𝑦(0)] + 3𝑌(𝑠) = 2
𝑠
We obtain:
2
+𝑠+4 2 + 𝑠 2 + 4𝑠 2 + 𝑠 2 + 4𝑠
𝑌(𝑠) = 2𝑠 = =
𝑠 + 4𝑠 + 3 𝑠(𝑠 2 + 4𝑠 + 3) 𝑠(𝑠 + 1)(𝑠 + 3)
The partial fraction expansion yields:
𝐴 𝐵 𝐶
𝑌(𝑠) = + +
𝑠 𝑠+1 𝑠+3
For the constants A, B and C using cover-up method we have:
A=2/3
B=1/2
C=-1/6
Hence, the response in the time domain is:
2 1 −𝑡 1 −3𝑡
𝑦(𝑡) = + 𝑒 − 𝑒
3 2 6
