Tutorial 4.

1 (Laplace)

1. Expand each of the following s-domain function into partial fractions:

6 (𝑠+1)
(a) 𝑌(𝑠) = 𝑠2 (𝑠+1)
(𝑠+2)(𝑠+3)
(b) 𝑌(𝑠) = (𝑠+4)(𝑠+5)(𝑠+6)
1
(c) 𝑌(𝑠) = ⌊(𝑠+1)2 +1⌋2 (𝑠+2)

2. (a) For each of the following cases, determine what functions of time, e.g. constant,
𝑒 −𝛿𝑡 , will appear in y(t). (Note that you do have to find y(t)) Which y(t) are oscillatory?
Which exhibit a constant value of y(t) for large values of t?

2
(i) 𝑌(𝑠) = 𝑠(𝑠2 +4𝑠)
2
(ii) Y(s) = 𝑠(𝑠2 +4𝑠+3)
2
(iii) Y (s) =
𝑠(𝑠2 +4𝑠+8)

3. Find the complete time-domain solution for the following differential equations
using Laplace transforms:

𝑑3 𝑥 𝑑𝑥(0) 𝑑2 𝑥(0)
(a) + 4𝑥 = 𝑒 𝑡 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑥 (0) = 0, = 0, =0
𝑑𝑡 3 𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡 2
𝑑𝑥
(b) − 12𝑥 = sin 3𝑡 𝑥(0) = 0
𝑑𝑡
𝑑2 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥(0)
(c) + 6 𝑑𝑡 + 25𝑥 = 𝑒 −𝑡 𝑥(0) = 0, =0
𝑑𝑡 2 𝑑𝑡

4. Find the solution of

𝑑𝑥
+ 4𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑡)
𝑑𝑡

Plot the solution for values of h = 1, 10, 100, and the limiting solution (h  ∞) from
t = 0 to t = 2. Put all plots on the same graph (Do use graph paper to assist).
