State Veterans’ Commission encourages celebration of vets JAIL REPORT

Each year on Nov. 11 we
commemorate Veterans Day.
This originates from the ar-
mistice that ended World
War I which occurred at 11
a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. In
1919, President Woodrow
Wilson designated Nov. 11
as Armistice Day to honor
the veterans who fought
in the Great War. After
WWII and the Korean War,
at the urging of veterans ser-
vice organizations, Congress
amended the commemora-
tion by changing the word
“armistice” to “veterans”.
The legislation was signed
by President Dwight E.
Eisenhower on June 1, 1954
changing Armistice Day to
Veterans Day to honor all
American veterans.
November 11 marks a
day of Honoring All Who
Served. Parades at large cities
and small towns across Texas
and community breakfasts
are among ways this day is
commemorated across our
great state. Join in the events
whether you’re a veteran or
not on Veterans Day, Nov.
11, 2019.
There are over 1.7 million
veterans in Texas. What is a
veteran? A veteran, whether
discharged, retired, active
duty or reserve, is a man
or woman who committed
themselves carte blanche
to the United States of
America for an amount up
to and including life. They
may have served at home or
abroad in a variety of ways
from motor pools to medical
facilities, combat to supply
chain. Veterans are men and
women from all walks of
life who served in the Army,
Marines, Navy, Air Force, or
Coast Guard. All served and
all are to be honored for that
service.
As this day honors those
who serve, I encourage Texas
veterans to claim the ben-
efits they have earned for
themselves, their spouses and
families. From education and
employment to disability
compensation and health
care, Texas veterans may call
on the Texas Veterans Com-
mission for assistance and to
smooth the process. Further,
we can help veterans strug-
gling with crisis to connect
with a fellow veteran to talk
with or with licensed mental
health providers. Veterans
who are business owners
or want to own their own
business can benefit from our
Entrepreneur program. For
those organizations provid-
ing services to veterans such
as financial assistance, food
and housing, we offer grants
through the Fund for Veter-

According to a 2017 report
from the National Survey on
Drug Use and Health, 1.6
million Americans reported
using methamphetamine
during the year prior to the
survey’s publication. The av-
erage age of users, according
to the study, was 23.3 years.
In addition to the live
presentations, Don’t Meth
with Me also uses PSAs in
newspapers to provide facts
about meth use. One aim
of the program, as stated on
its website, is to “educate
our children before the drug
dealers get to them.” For
Barker, the goal of educat-
ing and helping eradicate
meth use in the area among
young people is especially
relevant, as he is the father of
a teenager. Springfield added
that Woodville Rotary Club
has the children and youth of
the community as its primary
focus.
Recent figures from the
Texas Youth Risk Behavior
Surveillance System state
that eight percent of high
school students in Texas have
used methamphetamine at
least once in their lives.
Barker said any way to get
the truth about the subject
to his daughter and her peer
group is important. “It [meth
use] is bad,” he said. “If you
choose to try it, unfortunate-
ly, the results aren’t good.”

Another member, Abby
Wilson, said it makes her
happy to do service projects
for others. “Doing service
makes me feel like a better

Wilson added that being a
Leo gives her something that
she can put on her resume
that not many others can.
Some of the projects the
Tyler County Leos have had
a hand in include cleaning
the Kirkland Springs park
near Woodville, helping with
the Lions’ annual rodeo and
travelling to the Hill Coun-
try to help out at the Lions’
Children’s Camp.
Some of the Leos who
took part in the trip to the
camp reminisced fondly on
volunteering there and of the
shared fellowship on the trip,
and all of the members share
respect and affection for
Jobe—and his lingo.
During last Monday’s
meeting, many of the mem-
bers used the word “stupid”
as a positive adjective. “This
pizza is stupid good!” one
of them chimed in, as Jobe
shook his head and said “I
gotta stop using that phrase.”
Rayburn, with a chuckle,
said “Being a Leo is stupid
good,” which in turn elicited
a hearty laugh from everyone
else in the room.
