The process of visioning


Visioning is a technique that is used to support a group of stakeholders in
developing a shared vision of the future. It involves asking the group of
participants to appraise where they are now and where they can realistically
expect to be in the future.
All the key stakeholders in a development activity or organization that go
through a considerable change regarding sanitation and water issues should
be represented in the visioning workshop. There are different approaches of
using visioning techniques such as using pictures or keywords or so called
organizational and guided visioning methods. The visioning process should be
implemented before decisions are made.

ELEMENTS OF VISIONING PROCESS


1. Values- are the foundation for Vision. Values are the essence of a
company’s philosophy for achieving success. They are the bedrock of
corporate culture.
a. Personal Values- are what we are passionate about as being important
and meaningful in our lives. Values energize, motivate, and inspire. Values are
the root of all learning.
b. Organizational values question-
 What do we stand for?
 How do we treat our employees and customers?
 What are our core values?
 How do we want to be seen by the community?
2. Scanning the current situation
-involves looking beyond the organization to its customers, suppliers and the
industry. It entails scrutinizing and analyzing information in and out of the
organization.
3. Mission
-is a Core Competency. The mission provides direction for developing
strategy, defining critical success factors, searching out key opportunities,
making resource allocation choices, and delighting customers and
stakeholders.
Your mission statement makes clear company’s uniqueness in the
marketplace.
4. Visioning
-A vision is a powerful mental image of what we want to create in the future. It
reflects what we care about most, represents an expression of what our
mission will look like and is aligned with our values and sense of purpose. A
vision statement should include your basic strategy on how you want to
achieve your mission. Visioning releases spirit and inspires you.
5. Implementation
-includes the strategy , plans, procedures and key actions that will put all of
the above into action.
FIVE-STEPS VISIONING SEQUENCE
Step 1- Clarify values
Define key values and what they mean in action.
Step 2- Scan the current situation
Examine the current environment internally and externally.
Step 3- Define the Mission
Clarify the basic purpose.
Step 4- Create a Vision
Generate a clear image of the preferred future.
Step 5- Implement the Vision
Create the strategic plans, and feedback loops to implement the
values, vision and mission.

ORGANIZATIONAL RENEWAL CYCLE


-It is important to undergoing organizational change and renewal to become
more competitive. Organizational change often starts with strategic
change, in the firm's strategy, mission, and vision. Strategic change may
then require other changes, for instance, in the firm's, production
technology, structure, and culture.

VISIONARY LEADERSHIP
 •The ultimate role of the visionary is to be the person who inspires change
and solutions in an organization, industry or the world.
 •Visionaries see things differently and must be able to communicate what
they see clearly, as well as why it is important. Excellent speaking or
writing skills help to paint a picture of a future that is better than our
present reality, in a way that makes people jump on board and insist on
being part of what is happening.

HOW VISIONARY FITS INTO THE PLANNING SEQUENCES?


1. Visionary is emotional
- visioning often unleashes conflicting forces. People feel at once hope and
motivation.
2. Visionary is an organizational change process
- shared visions are the foundations for making change. The process of
conduction an organization scan, clarifying mission, and vision can mean that
the people in the organization will become more empowered and committed
to the result.
3. Visioning requires involvement
-one of the most important parts of this whole process is the amount of
involvement of the key stakeholders. it is tempting to take a small group off to
do the visioning and then deliver the mission to everyone else.

PRINCIPLES OF VISIONING
 If people create the vision, they will own it and implement of the vision will
happen more quickly.
 the process of developing the vision is as important as its outcome.
 visions are best stated in the language of the key stakeholders.
 visions helps to focus the strategic planning process and therefore needs
to be developed before planning takes places.
