Assignment- 1

a.) Analyse the communication in the movie “Bawarchi”.

Sol.: This movie was released in the year of 1972, and was directed by Hrishikesh
Mukherjee. Amitabh Bachchan narrated the story, with Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bhaduri,
Harindranath Chattopadhyay, AK Hungle, Durga Khote in lead roles. To me this movie is
more like a stage drama with a brilliant screenplay and high moral. Every scene tells us
something.
The plot of the movie revolves around one character named ''Raghu'' (Raghunandan), who is
bawarchi (cook) by profession, and a large family led by Shiv Nath Sharma (Harindranath
Chattopadhyay).
The family consist of grown-up sons, daughter-in-law’s and kids. A kind of ''Hindu
Undivided Family'', but divided over small and simple issues. Most of the members of family
are having mistrust and misunderstand among each other because of communication issues.
Nobody wants to work there and take the responsibility of the family in terms of doing daily
course like cooking due to their rude and overbearing nature.
Due to their lack of communication they are not able to develop an understanding between
them because of which they fight among themselves at least once a day. They even don't get
any servant/cook who works for longer even when they are ready to pay more because of this
nature. Things are getting worsen day by day, and now it’s at the edge of destruction.
And then one day there comes a young man name Raghu, who joins the family as cook on a
very low salary and very soon wins the heart of everyone in the family because of his high
communication skills and buttering nature.
Meanwhile he develops understanding and faith among the family members. He reminds
them about how much they love each other (which they have forgotten long back). He
reminded the two brothers Ramnath and Kashinath of the childhood memories. He inspired
Mita to change by showing her the importance of humility. Incremental efforts can lead to
dramatic change. Raghu aimed at bringing small changes in their attitude. The
communication strategy he used for all the members were not the same, they were according
to the individual’s interests and level of maturity.
Also, all talks and no action motivate none. Hence, Raghu led an example. Through his
continuous effect, all members of family started trusting and helping each other.

b.) Based on “Ego States”, give instances of communication breakdown and conflicts arising
due to this.
Sol.: The story of Bawarchi revolves around the simple nitty gritty issues in an Indian
household. Basically, this film explores the tensions and rivalry within the Sharma family
because of their ego states. The setting is of joint Indian family with people of three
generations living together. Their value systems have changed over the three generations.
There is utter chaos and confusion in the house. The old man Shivnath is wailing for his
morning tea. He is always in his parent ego state, where he cares for Krishna seeing his
filialness but also have a style of functioning where he thinks he is ok but others are not. The
daughter- in- laws are reluctant to do the household chores. They also have parent state ego
where they are always trying to be authoritive around Krishna and among other family
members of family. Tussle arises among the brothers in the morning regarding the
responsibilities of grocery shopping. As a result, they get late to office. Ramnath is
reprimanded at office and threatened to be fired. Krishna dutifully carries out the chores of
everyone in the house. She has adult and child ego state where she wants to solve the family
issues rationally but is not able to because of her dependent style. Each one in the house has
an inward-looking approach to life. They are concerned only of their own work and pleasure.
No one wants to take accountability for anyone else. Mita leads a carefree life enjoying
parties and dance. Vishwanath is busy with his music. He cooks some bread and eggs in his
room. Kashinath and his wife are interested in the gold jewellery and the greed is holding
them back in the house. Each one in the house eyes the other with suspicion and distrust. Rita
and Shobhna keep passing on the buck from each other. The old man is complaining over the
changing values over generations – the changing relationships where the old are no longer
treated with respect showcasing is parent ego state. They also do not acknowledge anyone
else’s difficulty or pain. Krishna who is the only soul who thinks of others has to sacrifice her
own interests. There is an atmosphere of tension and a cloud of ill feeling hangs over the
house. At this point Raghu, the new cook enters the movie. He is in adult ego sate where he
acts rationally and solve the issue of family. He brings about change in the family’s attitude
by small activities like eating and drinking together. Raghu teaches them the important values
of respecting each other and thoughtfulness by story-telling and indirect references in an
unassuming way. Raghu wins the confidence of the family members by taking interest in
each of their lives.

c.) Describe how this learning will help you in maintaining good inter personal relationship
with people at your place of work.
Sol.: This learning will help me a lot in maintaining a good inter personal relationships with
people at my work place because it has made me understand the importance of
communication to have a happy and conflict free life. Also, by maintaining good inter
personal relationship with people at my workplace, it will help me or any individual as:
 An individual spends around eight to nine hours in his organization and it is
practically not possible for him to work all alone. An individual working in
isolation is more prone to stress and anxiety. They hardly enjoy their work and attend
office just for the sake of it. Individuals working alone find their job monotonous. It is
essential to have trustworthy fellow workers around with whom one can share all his
secrets without the fear of them getting leaked. We must have friends at the
workplace who can give us honest feedback.
 A single brain alone can’t take all decisions alone. Employees can brainstorm
together and reach to better ideas and strategies. Strategies must be discussed on an
open platform where every individual has the liberty to express his/her views.
 Interpersonal relationship has a direct effect on the organization culture.
Misunderstandings and confusions lead to negativity at the workplace. Conflicts lead
you nowhere and in turn spoil the work environment.
 We need people around who can appreciate our hard work and motivate us from
time to time. It is essential to have some trustworthy co-workers at the workplace
who not only appreciate us when we do some good work but also tell us our mistakes.
A pat on the back goes a long way in extracting the best out of individuals. One needs
to have people at the workplace who are more like mentors than mere colleagues.
 It always pays to have individuals around who really care for us. We need
colleagues to fall back on at the times of crisis. If you do not talk to anyone at the
workplace, no one would come to your help when you actually need them.
 An individual needs to get along with fellow workers to complete assignments
within the stipulated time frame. An Individual working all alone is overburdened
and never finishes tasks within deadlines. Support of fellow workers is important.
You just can’t do everything on your own. Roles and responsibilities must be
delegated as per specialization, educational qualification and interests of employees.
