Printing of logos on T-shirts is done in batches. On average, 6 designers per hour need to use
the printing machine and their instance is respected at Rs.50 per hour. A verdict needs to be
made on whether to lease a HP or IBM thermal printers. The HP printer can complete an
average job in 5 minutes and has a leasing charge of Rs.16.00 per hour, whereas the IBM
printer will take 8 minutes but has a leasing charge of Rs.12.00 per hour. Which printer is
most cost efficient?

The computer-based research center at DAI has a customer service person to aid visitors
working on PC based reports. The arrival rate of visitors, on average, 15 per hour arrive at the
help desk with Poisson distribution. The customer service can facilitate a mean of 20 students
per hour, following exponential distribution. Calculate the following:
(a) The average utilization of the customer service person
(b) The average number of visitors in the system. (c) The average number of visitors waiting
in line (d) The average time a visitor spends in the system
(e) The average time a visitor spends waiting in line
(f) The probability of having more than 5 visitors in the system
(g) The probability of having at most 5 visitors in the system
(h) The probability of having exactly 15 visitors in the system
(i) Average cost due to waiting on the part of the customer service person, if he is paid Rs.
150 per hour for a 10-hour work shift.
(j) The probability of having visitors anywhere from 10 to 12 in the research center.

Q_2b: (5 marks)
The computer-based research center at DAI has decided to augment the number of PC-based
report work their scholars and is anxious about the blow on the customer service person. As
an alternative of a solo person working, the research center is taking into consideration a plan
to have three indistinguishable customer service persons. The expected arrival of scholars is at
a rate of 45 per hour, with a Poisson distribution. The service rate for each of the three
persons is 18 scholars per hour, with exponential service times. Calculate the following:
(a) The average utilization of the customer service person
(b) The probability that there are no scholars in the system
(c) The average number of scholars waiting in line. (d) The average time a scholar spends
waiting in line. (e) The average time a scholar spends in the system
(f) The average number of scholars in the system

Q_3: (5 marks)
One mechanic services 5 drilling machines for a steel plate manufacturer. Machines break
down on an average of once every 6 working days, and breakdowns tend to follow a Poisson
distribution. The mechanic can handle an average of one repair job per day. Repairs follow an
exponential distribution.
(a) How many machines are waiting for service, on average?
(b) How many are in the system, on average? (c) How many drills are in running order, on
average?
(d) What is the average waiting time in the queue? (e) What is the average wait in the
system?

Q_4: (5 marks)
A technician monitors a group of five computers that run an automated manufacturing
facility. It takes an average of 15 minutes (exponentially distributed) to adjust a computer that
develops a problem. The computers run for an average of 85 minutes (Poisson distributed)
without requiring adjustments. What is the:
(a) Average number of computers waiting for adjustment?
(b) Average number of computers not in working order? (c) Probability the system is empty?
(d) Average time in the queue? (e) Average time in the system?

Q_5: (5 marks)
A university is about to lease a super computer. There are two alternatives available.
– The M computer which is more expensive to lease but also faster
– The C computer which is cheaper but slower
Processing times and times between job arrivals are exponential  M/M/1 model
–  = 20 jobs per day
– M = 30 jobs per day
– C = 25 jobs per day
The leasing and waiting costs:
– Leasing price: CM = $500 per day, CC = $350 per day
– The waiting cost per job and time unit is estimated to $50 per job and day
Which computer should the university choose in order to minimize the expected costs?
