“Cra-a-ck! Broo-om!” The lightning flash followed by the boom of the
thunder, caused shrieks of surprise and fear among the grade six pupils of
Miss Marbella. Instinctively, the boys closed the windows as a safety
precaution. The girls covered their ears in fear.
“There’s no need to fear the thunder. It is harmless even if it
produces loud cracking sounds,” said Miss Marbella. “What we should be
afraid of is lightning.”
“Why should we be afraid of lightning,” chorused the children.
“Lightning is a flash of light in the sky caused by the passing of

Green plants make sugar in their leaves under the sunlight. It is
chlorophyll, the green coloring matter of the leaves that is responsible for
this. At night, when the sun is out, the leaf’s work in manufacturing sugar is
done. The leaf now passes the liquid sugar down through special tubes in
the branches to the trunk and roots where it is stored.
In great chemical laboratories, scientists are trying to discover the
leaf’s secret. They hope to copy the green chlorophyll to make the food for
the world. But until now, green plants have kept their secrets only to
themselves.
While green leaves are using carbon dioxide to make the sugar for
the plants, they are also purifying the air. Pure oxygen and moisture, which
are left-over from food making, flow out of little windows called stomata in
the leaf. The air becomes fresh. That is why forest air is so pleasant and
healthful to breathe. This is one of the reasons why we need to plant trees
in our surroundings.

very much to find another tamarao. He wants to have a family, but he never
saw another tamarao. Hunters have killed almost all of them. Tammy is one
of the tamaraos left in the Philippines.
