Many insects and animals have colors and patterns that help
to protect them against predators that might eat them. Camouflage
also helps predators to hunt. Grasshoppers and tree snakes are
green. They match the grass and leaves around them, which makes
them hard to see. Polar bears live in the Arctic and are white. The
color of their fur helps them to blend into the snow and ice as they
search for food.

“Cra-a-ck! Broo-om!” The lightning flash followed by the boom of the
thunder, caused shrieks of surprise and fear among the grade six pupils of
Miss Marbella. Instinctively, the boys closed the windows as a safety
precaution. The girls covered their ears in fear.
“There’s no need to fear the thunder. It is harmless even if it
produces loud cracking sounds,” said Miss Marbella. “What we should be
afraid of is lightning.”
“Why should we be afraid of lightning,” chorused the children.
“Lightning is a flash of light in the sky caused by the passing of
electricity from one cloud to another. Thunder is caused by the rushing of
cold air to replace the heated air along the path of a lightning,” Miss
Marbella’s explanation to everyone.
“Lightning is electricity,” explained Miss Marbella. “As I’ve said
earlier, electricity gives us light and heat. It is strong and powerful. We are
afraid of the lightning because of the harm it might bring us. The best way to
avoid being stuck by it is to stay indoors during thunderstorm. We should
close our doors and windows to prevent drafts from the rain. If we are
caught outdoors, we must stay away from tall trees. Wet things attract
lightning.”

Water has many uses in our homes. Without water, we cannot cook
our food, wash our clothes nor take a bath. Fires are put out by means of
water. Water is important as means of transportation such as boats and
steamship. Logs and other products are transported on water. Water is the
home of many animals.
All living things need water. But, water sometimes causes sorrow to
man. During heavy rain, the rivers swell and overflow their banks which
results in floods. These floods destroy crops and homes. Men and animals
get drowned in the flood. When land is soaked in water, landslides may
results.
