STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT

I. Describe the Class

The class I will be teaching is 9th grade, regular english class. The average class will be
about 33 students. Two students have a learning disability. Four students are gifted. Six
students have English as their second language.

II. Subject/Skill:
The subject is English. I will be focusing on composition and writing skills. More
specifically, I will teach how to write a well focused, thesis driven, persuasive essay.

III. Objective(s)
SWBAT: create a solid thesis statement based on their topic assigned after collaborating
with peers and developing thesis statements in class, with a success rate of 85%.

IV. Procedures
-Warm up: Review objectives. Review audience, tone, and occasion, what a persuasive
essay is and what it is used for.
-Lecture: Define a thesis statement and what is included in a good thesis statement.
-Examples: Create a thesis statement based on examples from students as a class.
-Independent work (evaluation):
Worksheet: Determine whether the statements provided are a good thesis
statement. Why or why not.
-Later discuss as a class the answers.
-Assign homework: Brainstorm and create your thesis based on your essay prompt.

Whiteboard to create a thesis with the class
Smart board to project lecture content
Handouts: Rules for a good thesis and assignment

VI. Grouping Structures


For the independent assignment in class, students will work individually. Then they will
be put in groups of three to discuss answers and how they modified the thesis statements.

VII. Modifications
Based on the lecture and how students are following, if students are struggling with
grasping the idea or behavior is a problem, then the assignment will be done as a class
with student participation.

VIII. Assessment
Students will be assessed based on the assignment in class, their participation and the
homework assignment.
