Dear Parents/Guardians:

The JHS 194 dress code was created to provide students with an environment conducive to learning. In dressing
appropriately, students come to school with the mindset that they are here to learn and prepare themselves for the
future. Dress code is intended to promote a more effective learning climate; foster school unity and pride; improve
student performance; foster self-esteem; eliminate label competition; simplify dressing and minimize cost to parents;
teach children appropriate dress and decorum in their "work" place; and help improve student conduct and discipline.

Students are expected to remain in dress code the entire time that they are in the building.

School Attire – CARR Dress Code

Pants - Solid color cotton pant or denim, in either khaki, blue, or black. Pants must be appropriately sized with no
ripped, torn, or distressed material. Wearing “leggings” underneath ripped jeans is not considered appropriate attire.
Cargo pants are appropriate and acceptable, as long as khaki, blue, or black.

Shirts - Collared polo shirts in the appropriate grade color or a JHS 194 t-shirt must be worn each day. Grade 6 wears
green, Grade 7 wears red, and Grade 8 wears blue. On any day, if a student would prefer, they can show their school
spirit and wear a JHS 194 shirt and still be considered in dress code.

Physical Education - Students MAY wear sweatpants and T-shirts or sweatshirts on their assigned gym day (2 times per
week). Sweatpants, sweatshirts and t-shirts must be navy or gray (school colors) with only logos, no slogans or writing
down leg or on the seat of the pants. Leggings are not deemed appropriate.

•Shoes or sneakers may be worn but only students wearing sneakers will be allowed to participate in physical education.
Open toe sandals, flip flops, slides, crocs, and high heels are NOT allowed.

•Pants should be worn at waistline, underwear should NOT show.

•No skin should be exposed between the bottom of the shirt and the top of the pants.
•“Hoodies” may be worn during the school day, as long as they are JHS 194 “hoodies”. Sweaters, Sweatshirts, and
cardigans with NO hoods may be worn over polo shirts during the school day.

•In colder months, T-shirts (long or short sleeves) may be worn UNDER collared polo shirts NOT over polo shirts.

•Students may wear solid color “khaki” cotton shorts or Blue denim shorts (no more than two inches above the knee).

•Skirts and dresses are not permitted.

Students who secure an exemption from dress code are still expected to adhere to the Citywide Standards of
Intervention and Discipline Measures. If students do not dress appropriately for school and choose to wear items that
are deemed unsafe (flip flops, slides, crocs, or open toe shoes) or inappropriate (i.e., items with lewd or rude slogans),
they can face the following disciplinary responses, including: detention, exclusion from extracurricular activities or
removal from communal lunch.

As deemed by the Chancellor’s Regulation, you have 30 days from the date of this notice, to fill out the appropriate form
to have your child exempt from dress code for the 2020-2021 school year. If you wish to do that, you will need to
contact the school for information on how to opt your child out of this dress code for the 2020-2021 school year, by
calling (718)746-0818.

As always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Respectfully,

Jennifer Miller
Principal
