THE IMPORTANCE OF DIDACTICS OF MATHEMATICS IN

COLOMBIA

Colombia is a country with an enormous diversity of socio-economic,

geographical, and cultural contexts. In fact, within the socioeconomic context,

deprivations and the social situation of poverty are the daily bread for many. All these

variables have an impact in many ways on how someone learns, especially children.

Developing models and applying local didactics is of great importance in changing the

perceptions and stigmatization around mathematics.

When many hear the word mathematics they think only of numbers and formulas,

but mathematics contributes a lot to our daily life and community. Teachers have a great

responsibility to change stigmas related to mathematics and didactics are one way to do

it.

People think and learn in context, a student and especially children can find the

sense and meaning of what they are learning by exploring the contents and understanding

the mathematical concepts applying them to local needs.

This is why the teacher must analyze the educational, social and cultural context

and take advantage of this information to develop didactics that are consistent with each

specific educational context and that allow the solution of local problems or needs in

which the child can find the meaning to the use of mathematics. This type of experiences

in which the child works with the theory from the practice allow to develop skills and

strengthen the processes of construction of knowledge.

Therefore, it is necessary that as an educational community in Colombia we can

continue to reflect on our educational realities and the contributions we can make to

them. This will take us towards the construction of local didactics, towards specific

perspectives from each context, offering solutions that are coherent with each reality and

in this way change the stigma that arises when speaking of mathematics.
