The County of San Diego has immediate openings for Temporary Nursing Student Workers  to be part
of the COVID-19 response team that helps prevent the spread of the virus.  As a Nursing Student
Worker, you will work alongside Registered Nurses and perform a variety of nursing duties including
providing direct patient care, and administering immunizations and tests. Determinations on
placement as a Nursing Student Worker will depend on the completion of specific coursework
completed.  
 
Both part-time and full-time hours (during school breaks) are available, and with varying shifts
including weekdays and weekends.  First review of applications will be October 21, 2020, however,
we are encouraging applicants to apply as soon as possible, as this will be a continuous hiring
process, with interviews being conducted as soon enough applications have been received.   

To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Applicants must be full-time students in a prelicensure Associates, Bachelor’s of Nursing or


Master’s of Nursing Program of an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0
semester/quarter grade point average (GPA); and, 
2. Completion of one or more of the following required courses: Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical
Surgical I, Medical Surgical II, and Medical Surgical III, OR, the equivalent.  Determinations on
assignments will depend on the coursework completed at time of employment; and, 
3.  A current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS) card. 

GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING:


To apply, students must be enrolled full-time in an accredited prelicensure program. A copy of your
Student Worker Unit Load Verification and college transcripts must be submitted at time of
application.  A completed official Student Worker Unit Load Verifcation with the school's
seal will be required at time of interview. 
 For undergraduate students, you must be currently enrolled in at least 12 semester units/5
quarter units, or determined to be a full-time student by an accredited school of nursing,
unless permanently disabled.
 For graduate students, you must be currently enrolled in at least 6 semester/9 quarter units,
or determined to be a full-time student by an accredited school of nursing, unless
permanently disabled. 

Notes:

 At the beginning and end of each semester/quarter, student workers/interns are responsible
for submitting a "student unit load verification" completed by their academic institution.
Student Workers shall comply with the established policies and practices of their assigned
school's internship program and the County of San Diego agreement regarding eligibility
requirements. 
 Undergraduate students or those completing a fifth year of study (e.g. for a teaching
credential or other certification) do not qualify as graduate students but may qualify as an
undergraduate student.
 The California Board of Nursing, in conjunction with the California Department of Public
Health, has authorized the use of unlicensed nursing students during the the COVID-19
pandemic. If hired, please be advised that this exception can end at any time, and impact
your employment with the County.

COMPENSATION:
Students are hired on a temporary basis and are paid at an hourly rate. Students are eligible to
receive sick leave benefits if they work for 30 days or more within a twelve month period. Hourly
rates are based on the level of education completed.

determined by the total number of semester/quarter units completed by the student.
