Report P1&P2&T1

The measurements are reported according to the ‘General guidance’ and the
results/lab notes are submitted with the report as appendices. In addition to ‘General
Guidance’, below are given some hints what is needed/required in this report.

In the ‘Abstract’ should be found answers to; What phenomena was studied in this
lab work? How this phenomena was studied? What was the studied material and what
parameters were varied? What were the main results of the whole experiment?

In the ‘Introduction’ You should first present answers (on general level) to the
following questions; Why polymer blends are prepared/used? What are the main
requirements/properties in the blends (in the molecular level), and how they influence
in the ‘macroscopic’ properties (e.g. mechanical) of the final product? How we can
modify these properties?

In the end of the Introduction, You should describe shortly (in one or two sentences)
what was done in this lab work?

In ‘Materials and methods’ You should describe the used equipments, parameters,
procedure, materials and equations. Basically, some other researcher should be able
to repeat You tests. Actually, the real challenge of this section is to find a nice balance
between too precise vs. too general description, e.g. You don’t have to tell that the
machine was turned on before the measurement was started.

In ‘Result’ You should present the numerical and visual results. In practice, You will
describe
- how the different extrudated looked like
- what was the max draw ratio for different compositions
- some information (based on visual ‘results’) about how the optimal parameters
for the injection molding step were found
- The numerical values for the mechanical properties of different materials
Remember, try to avoid any hypothesis/explanations here, there is plenty room for
those in the ‘Discussion’.

In ‘Discussion’ You should explain You results (mainly mechanical), and estimate
how these results correlate with the literature (i.e. with the results of similar studies,
material properties from the data sheets). And here You can explain etc.

Finally, You will answer to some question

Answer the following questions:

1. Why does a twin-screw extruder mix better than a single-screw extruder?
2. In which case it is beneficial to have narrow residence time distribution, and
when a broad residence time distribution is wanted?
3. Describe shortly the injection molding cycle.
4. Where do we need ‘Change pressure’ in injection molding cycle?
5. Give examples of plastics where the tensile strain at break is significant in
practice and when it is not.
6. Mention an application for brittle and tough polymers and give examples.
