INTRODUCTION
An escalator is a power driven , continuous moving stairway
designed to transport passengers up and down short vertical
distance .
Escalators are used around the world to move pedestrian traffic in
places where elevators would be impractical.
The benefits of escalators are many like they have the capacity to
move large numbers of people.
THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS:
There are two types of companies that supply escalators:-
1 -Primary manufacturers 2 -Secondary suppliers

Who actually build Who design and install

the equipment’s the equipment’s

In most cases the secondary suppliers obtain the necessary

equipment from the primary manufactures and make necessary
modifications for installation.
The first stage of escalators construction is to establish the design
and accordingly the manufacturer of customized equipment are
built up
WORKING PROCESS
1-Conventional mechanism 2- Modern mechanism

Conventional mechanism
An escalator is a continuously moving staircase so the core of
an
Escalator is a pair of chains ,looped around two pairs of gears
and an electric motor runs it.
And mainly each stair has a pair of wheels on each side, one at
the front of the step and one at the rear.
The wheels run on two rails which are placed on top and bottom
The inner rail dips beneath the outer rail, so that the bottom of
the stair flattens ,making Structure extending between two
floors, as the chain move ,the steps always stay level

COMPONENTS
LANDING TRUSS STEPS TRACKS HANDRAIL
LANDING PLATFORMS LN BhgsatyghBNZ
An escalator consists of top and bottom landing platforms connected by a metal truss.

The top platform contains the motor

assembly and the main drive gear.

The bottom platform holds the step return

to the sprockets

TRUSS
The truss is a hallow metal structure that bridges the lower and upper landing its composed joined together with
Cross braces across the bottom and just below the top the ends of truss are attached to the top and bottom landing
Platform via steel or concrete supports.

STEPS
The steps are solid one piece die cast aluminium or steel yellow demarcation lines may be added to clearly

Indicate their edges.

THE TRACKS
The
` track system is built into the truss to guide the step chain, which continuously pulls the steps from the bottom
platform and Back to the top in an endless loop.

HANDRAIL
The handrail provides a convenient handhold for passengers while they are riding the escalators.

INCLINED

MOVING WALKWAYS – TRAVELLATOR

A slow moving conventional mechanism that transport people across a horizontal
plane over a short medium distance.
Can be used by standing or walking on them ,they are often installed in pairs one
of each other
Moving belt – these are generally
Built with mesh metal belts or
Rubber walking surface over
Metal rollers.
HIGH SPEED WALKWAYS
Using the high speed walkway is like using any other walkways ,rider must have at
least one hand free to hold the handrail those carrying bags shopping etc
Must use ordinary walkways
INCLINED MOVING WALKWAYS
Is used to move people to another floor so that people can carry their suitcase trolley
or shopping cart and baby carriage.
