Grammar. The present continuous.

The present continuous expresses actions in progress now. Use a form of be and the
present participle of the verb.

Affirmative Statements:

Subject + Verb To Be + Present participle + Complement


I am studying English.
She is copying the sentences.
He is playing soccer.
It is raining right now.
You are paying attention.
We are learning English.
They are working now.

Remember: you can use


contractions, I’m, you’re, he’s,
she’s, it’s, they’re.

Negative Statements:
I am not / 'm not studying English.
She is not / isn’t copying the sentences.
He is not / isn’t playing soccer.
It is not / isn’t raining right now.
You are not / aren’t paying attention.
We are not / aren't learning English.
They are not / aren’t working now.

Yes/No Questions:

RULE EXAMPLES
Most verbs add -ing: hold – holding
read – reading
drink - drinking
Verbs ending in e, eliminate the e and take – taking
add -ing: leave – leaving
Verbs ending in x, y, w, just add -ing: enjoy – enjoying
study – studying
One syllable verbs ending in consonant + swim – swimming
vowel + consonant, double the last con- run – running
sonant and add –ing: put – putting
Two syllable verbs that end in consonant permit – permitting
+ vowel + consonant and the last syllable begin – beginning
is stressed: double the last consonant submit - submitting
and add –ing: Non-stressed syllables:
happen – happening
open – opening
visit - visiting
