Methods for Solving Quadratic Equations

• Factoring
• Square Root Property
• Quadratic formula

Factoring
Simple and quick method for solving quadratic equation out of the 3 methods. Use when the
equation is factorable.
Example:
3x2 - 4x = 4 Rewrite to ax2 + bx + c = 0
3x2 - 4x – 4 = 0 Factorable? Yes, factor
(3x + 2) (x - 2) Solve

(3x + 2)
3x + 2 = 0
3x = -2
x = - 2/3

(x - 2)
x–2=0
x=2

x = { -2/3, 2} Solutions

Square Root Property

Use when:
• Equation has no x-term
• Equation is squared binomial
Example:
(3x – 4)2 = 16 A squared binomial? Yes, find the square root of both sides
3x – 4 = 4 4 to the right can be positive or negative. Solve for x

3x = 4 + 4 or 3x = 4 – 4
3x/3 = 4/3 +4/3 or 3x/3 = 4/3 - 4/3
x = 4+4/3 = 8/3
x = 4-4/3 = 0/3 = 0
x = {8/3, 0} Solutions
