Solve each quadratic equation by
factoring.
1. 2x² - 98 = 0 (x -7) (x + 7) = 0
x = 7 or x = -7

2. 2x² - 8x + 8 = 0 (x - 2) (x - 2) = 0
x = 2 or x = 2

3. 2x² - 6 = 4x (x - 3)(x + 1) = 0
x = 3 or x = -1
What’ s New

There are varieties of nonquadratic equations that are transformable into

quadratic equations. Once these equations are transformed into quadratic
equations, then they can be solved using the different methods that were
already discussed.

Solve the following equations:

1. x(x – 3) = 28
2. (x + 3)2 + (x + 2)2 = 5
3. 2(3x – 2)2 + 5(3x – 2) + 3 = 0
Solutions:
1. x(x – 3) = 28 This is an example of a quadratic equation that is not written in
standard form. First we must find the product of x and x – 3.

x(x – 3) = 28
x2 – 3x = 28
We can now write the resulting quadratic equation in standard form.
x2 – 3x – 28 = 0
From here, we can use any of the four methods; we will use factoring since the given is
factorable.

(x – 7)(x + 4) = 0 factoring
x – 7 = 0 or x + 4 = 0 zero factor property
x = 7 or x = - 4 APE

Check if x = 7 and x = -4 satisfy the original equation.

2. (x + 3)2 + (x + 2)2 = 5 Again, this is an example of a quadratic equation that
is not written in standard form.
Solutions:
(x + 3)2 + (x + 2)2 = 5 given
x2 + 6x + 9 + x2 + 4x + 4 = 5 expanding binomial
x2 + x2 + 6x + 4x + 9 + 4 = 5 combining similar terms
2x2 +10x + 13 = 5 simplify
2x2 +10x + 8 = 0 standard form of Q.E
(2x + 2)(x + 4) = 0 factoring
2x + 2 = 0 or x + 4 = 0 zero factor property
x = -1 or x = -4 APE

Check if x = -1 and x = -4 satisfy the original equation.

3. 2(3x - 2)2 + 5(3x - 2) + 3 = 0 (3x – 2) is common to both terms, and the given
equation is in quadratic form.
Solutions:
Let y = 3x - 2
2y2 + 5y + 3 = 0 replacing 3x – 2 by y

(2y + 3)(y + 1) = 0 factoring

2y + 3 = 0 or y + 1= 0 zero factor property
2y = -3 y = -1 APE
y = -3/2 MPE
To find x, substitute 3x – 2 for y.
3x - 2 = -3/2 or 3x - 2 = -1
6x - 4 = -3 3x =1
6x = 1 x =1/3
x = 1/6
Check if x = 1/6 and x = 1/3 satisfy the original equation.
  Solving Rational Algebraic Equations Transformable into
Quadratic Equations.

Solve the following equations by getting the roots.

1. x + = 3

2. - = 2

Solutions:

In solving this kind of equation, first we must clear the equation of the
fractions and then write the resulting quadratic equation in standard form.
 1. x+ =3

 x(x + ) = 3(x) multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD

x2 + 2 = 3x simplify
x2 – 3x + 2 = 0 standard form of the Q.E
(x – 2)(x – 1) = 0 factoring

x – 2 = 0 or x–1=0 zero factor property

x=2 x=1 APE

 Checking:

when x = 2 when x = 1

x +=3 x +=3

2+ =3 1+ =3

2+1=3 1+2=3

3=3 3=3
x = 1 is a root of the quadratic
equation
Since the left side is equal to the right side,
therefore x = 2 is a root of the equation.
 2. - =2

 (x + 1)(x+2) ( - ) = (2)(x + 1)(x + 2) multiply both sides by the LCD

3(x+2) – 2(x + 1) = (2)(x2 + 3x + 2) apply DPMA

3x + 6 – 2x - 2 = 2x2 + 6x + 4 simplify
3x – 2x + 6 - 2 = 2x2 + 6x + 4 combine similar term
x + 4 = 2x2 + 6x + 4 simplify
0 = 2x2 + 6x - x + 4 - 4 APE
0 = 2x2 + 5x simplify
2x2 + 5x = 0 symmetric property
x(2x + 5) = 0 factoring
x=0 or 2x + 5 = 0 zero factor property
 x =- APE
 Checking:

 Checking:
when x = 0 when x = 0

-=2 -=2

-=2 -=2

3-1=2 -2 + 4 = 2

2=2 2=2
x = 0 is a root
 x = is a root
What I Have Learned
In order to find the roots of equations
transformable into quadratic equations, we
must rewrite the equation first into quadratic
equation in standard form and then apply
any of the four methods that is most suited
to get the roots.
Solve each the following equations.
 1. x(x-3) = 18

2. x +

3. (x + 4)2 = 36

4. 2(3x-1)2 + 5(3x-1) + 2 = 0

5. − =7

Let us now apply the concept that we
learned about the quadratic equation in
problem-solving. In dealing with word
problems, one strategy that can be used is
the Four (4) Steps process called RESA.
R for Representation: In this step, you will assign variable/s to
translate the phrases or sentences algebraically.
E for Equation: Next thing to do is to make or to create your
working equation considering all the given conditions in the
problem.
S for Solution: This is the step wherein you will find the solution
to the problem by applying all the necessary mathematical
concepts.
A for Answer: Lastly, you have to write your answer in the
concluding statement
Illustrative Example:
1. The difference between two positive integers is 5, and their product is 126.
Find the two integers.

Representation: Let x be the first integer ( positive )

x – 5 be the second integer
Equation: The product of the two numbers
𝑥(𝑥 − 5) = 126
Solution: 𝑥(𝑥 − 5) = 126
𝑥2 − 5𝑥 = 126
x2 − 5𝑥 − 126 = 0
(𝑥 − 14)(𝑥 + 9 ) = 0
𝑥 − 14 = 0 𝑜𝑟 𝑥+9=0

𝑥 = 𝟏𝟒 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = −9

Since we are looking for positive integer, x should be 14 and discard -9. To get
the second integer substitute the value of x to:

𝒙 − 5 = 𝟏𝟒 − 5 = 9

Answer: The two integers are 9 and 14.

2. The length of a rectangular room is 2 feet more
than twice its width. If the total area in the room is
220 square feet, find the dimensions of the room.
Representation: Let x be the width of the room
2x + 2 be the length of the room
Equation: length ∙ width = area
x( 2x+2 ) = 220
Solution: 𝑥( 2𝑥 + 2 ) = 220

2𝑥2 + 2𝑥 = 220

2𝑥2 + 2𝑥 − 220 = 0
a=2 b=2 c = − 220

Since the width cannot be negative, x = 10

Width x = 10
Length 2x + 2 = 2(10) + 2 = 20+2 = 22

 𝑥
Answer: The dimensions of the room is
=
10 ft by 22 ft.

 𝑥 =  𝑥 =

 𝑥 = = 10  𝑥 = = - 11
3. Angelica walks 𝟑 miles to the house of a friend and returns home on a bike.
She averages 𝟒 miles per hour faster when cycling than when walking, and the
total time for both trips is two hours. Find her walking speed.

Representation: Let r be the speed of Angelica when walking

r + 4 the speed of Angelica when cycling
  time of Angelica to walk to her friend’s house

  time of Angelica to cycle back.

Equation:  + =2

Solution:  + =2
Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD 𝒓(𝒓 + 𝟒).
𝟑(𝒓 + 𝟒) + 𝟑𝒓 = 𝟐𝒓(𝒓 + 𝟒)
𝟑 𝒓 + 𝟏𝟐 + 𝟑𝒓 = 𝟐𝒓𝟐 + 𝟖r
2𝒓𝟐 + 𝟐𝒓 − 𝟏𝟐 = 0
𝒓𝟐 + 𝒓 − 6 = 0
(𝒓 − 𝟐)(𝒓 + 𝟑) = 0
𝒓–𝟐=0 or 𝒓+𝟑=0
𝒓=𝟐 or 𝒓 = -𝟑
Since r cannot be negative, r = 2.
Answer: Angelica ‘s walking speed is 2 miles per hour
4. Two taps A and B fill a swimming pool together in two hours. Alone, it
takes tap A three hours less than B to fill the same pool. How many hours
does it take each tap to fill the pool separately?

Representation:
Let x be the time of tap A to fill the swimming pool alone
x + 3 be the time of tap B to fill the swimming pool alone
Equation:  + =

Solution:  + =

multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD 2(x)(x + 3)

2(𝑥 + 3)) + 2(𝑥) = 2(𝑥)(𝑥 + 3)
2𝑥 + 6 + 2𝑥 = 𝑥2 + 3x
𝑥2 − 𝑥 − 6 = 0
(𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 + 2) = 0
𝑥−3=0 𝑜𝑟 𝑥+2=0
𝑥=3 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = −2
Since x cannot be negative, x = 3

Answer: Tap A takes 3 hours to fill the pool alone while tap B
takes 6 hours to fill the same pool alone.

consecutive even numbers (in cm). Find the values of these sides.

Representation: Let x be the length of the shorter leg

x + 2 be the length of the longer leg
x + 4 be the length of the hypotenuse
Equation: 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2= 𝑐 2
(𝒙)𝟐 + (𝒙 + 𝟐)𝟐 = (𝒙 + 𝟒)2
Solution: (𝒙)𝟐 + (𝒙 + 𝟐)𝟐 = (𝒙 + 𝟒)2
𝑥2 + 𝑥2 + 4𝑥 + 4 = 𝑥2 + 8𝑥 + 16
2𝑥2 + 4𝑥 + 4 = 𝑥2 + 8𝑥 + 16
2𝑥2 − 𝑥2 + 4𝑥 − 8𝑥 + 4 − 16 = 0
𝑥2 − 4𝑥 − 12 = 0
 𝑥 =  𝑥 =

 𝑥 =  𝑥 =

𝑥= 6 𝑥 = -2

Since the lengths are always nonnegative, x = 6
