Social media in Morocco

I. Introduction

Social media are the applications and websites that allow the creation and sharing of information,
ideas, photos, opinions, events… etc in real time. They could be used on computers, tablets or
smartphones.

II. General overview


a) Geographical overview
Morocco is a country located in North Africa, it has a surface area of 712,550 km² including western
Sahara, and 446,550 km² excluding western Sahara, it has two nautical interfaces; the Mediterranean
Sea which surrounds the north and the north east of morocco (From Tangier to Saidia), and the Atlantic
Ocean that surrounds the north west, the west and the south west of morocco (from Tangier to
Lagouira); Therefore Tangier is the only city in Morocco that has two nautical interfaces and it’s the
nearest city to Europe (Spain)
with 13 km.
Morocco has four Mountain chains; The High Atlas, The Middle Atlas, The Rif and
the anti-Atlas. Those chains represent a great fortune for Morocco because they are a principal actor in
the economy of the country not only because of the fruitful agriculture of those chains but also they
attract many tourists who like adventure activities or Hiking.

b) Demographical overview
The population of Morocco is 33,848,242 following the statistics of 2014, the major portion of
Moroccans are Arabs; who speak the original dialect of Morocco called Darija, and the other portions
are Berbers who have their own dialects and accent. The first language of Moroccans is Arabic,
followed by French and then English, Spanish and German.

c) Cultural overview
Moroccans are generally warm people, they are known by their hospitality and kindness, and they have
their particular customs, traditions and beliefs.

III. Internet in Morocco

Internet is the worldwide network to exchange information in electronic format, Moroccans have
discovered internet in 15 November 1995, the first services offered by internet were E-mail, file
transfer (FTP), remote work (TELNET) and newsgroups (USENET). Internet has a huge success in
Morocco, thanks to the technologies of the ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line), which
allows to offer a high and very high speed and services such as digital television by ADSL, 3G and
4G.

IV. Platform providers in Morocco


a) Main platform providers in Morocco
Moroccans use generally more social media than television or newspaper, Facebook is the most famous
social media in Morocco; around 15 million users keep in touch, share photos, videos, messages and
follow the news. Companies use it to communicate with their customers (photos, videos, live stream,
after-sales service, chatbot etc.), make targeted advertising or sell online. After Facebook comes
Youtube,Whatsapp, Instagram, LinkenIn, Pinterest, twitter, snapchat and google hangouts.
b) Roles
Platform providers have a huge impact on life in Morocco; they facilitate communication, and make life
easier for Moroccans. They can even be a factor to change population’s ideas.

V. Users of social media in Morocco


Users of social media in morocco are either normal citizens or professional users like companies, they
can be used also for boycott compains like ‘“Khelih Irib” which can be translated into “let it spoil”, is
an Arabic hashtag that was shared and re-shared by social media users on social networks’
