CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS

TUTORIAL 2: SHOW ALL WORKINGS IN DETAIL.

1. Calculate the heat required to raise the temperature of 1 mol of methane from 260 to 600
ºC
in a steady-flow process at a pressure sufficiently low that methane may be considered an ideal
gas.

2. What is the final temperature when heat in the amount of 0.4 × 106 (Btu) is added to 25 (lb
mol) of ammonia initially at 500 (°F) in a steady-flow process at 1 (atm)?

3. Given that the latent heat of vaporization of water at 100 °C is 2.257 J g -1, estimate the
latent
heat at 300 °C.

4. Estimate the molar volume of nitrogen gas at 273 K and 10 bar using the van der Waals
equation of state. Parameters a and b for nitrogen are 1.37 L2bar.mol-2 and 0.0387
L.mol-1, respectively. The universal gas constant is 8.314x10-2 L.bar.K-1.mol-1. The van
der Waals equation of state is:
P = RT/(V – b) – a/V2
5. Estimate the residual molar volume of pentane at 32.22 oC and 1.68 bar using the Pitzer
correlation:
Z = Z0 + ωZ1
You are given the following data:
TC = 469.8 K
PC = 33.6 bar
log10(Psat) = 3.9892 – 1070.617/(T – 40.454); T in K, Psat in bar

THEORY QUESTIONS
1. Define the isothermal compressibility and volume expansivity.
2. If you are given a flask containing solid iodine in equilibrium with its vapour, can you
control both the temperature and pressure inside the fixed volume flask and maintain
the equilibrium at your desired conditions? Explain why.
3. Sketch a P-T phase equilibrium diagram for a generic pure species, showing the
region where each phase is located, and labelling the lines between phases, as well as
the triple point and critical point.
4. Define adiabatic process
