Stay safe and healthy by following these important

safety tips and enjoy everything that summer has to offer.

Protect Your Family by the Pool

Swim in areas with lifeguards and always have young children under adult supervision when near water. Drowning is
among the leading cause of death for children in America. A majority of drowning deaths for children ages 1 - 4
occur in pools at home. Children who are drowning rarely call or wave for help because they can't keep their head
or arms above the water. For those reasons young children and or weak swimmers should always wear a life jacket
or PFD (Personal Flotation Device) and ensure that an adult is within arm’s reach at all times when spending time near
water.

Protect Your Family from Heat

Avoid being outdoors during the midday if the Sun is intense. If you must do strenuous activities do
them during the coolest parts of the day. However when outdoors be sure to apply sunscreen with at
least SPF 15 every 90 min, cover up with clothing, and wear a brimmed hat for extra protection against
harmful ultraviolet rays.

Remember that young children and babies can easily become overheated and serious health effects can
be the result. Be prepared by knowing the forecast and by providing plenty of fluids & shade while
outdoors and never leave small children or pets alone in your vehicle

Protect Your Family from Insect Bites

Prevent insect bites and illnesses by following a few simple tips. Wear protective lightweight clothing when working or playing
outdoors. Use tight fitting window and door screens to keep insects out of your home. Apply insect repellent containing 20%
DEET to your clothing and skin.

Protect Your Family from Snakebites

Prevent snakebites by following a few simple tips. Educate your children about the risks associated with
touching a wild snake. Talk about why some snakes are dangerous and that they only bite to kill their food or
if they feel threatened. Talk with your child about what to do if they see a snake.
If going to a location where snakes live; wear closed toe shoes, stomp while walking, watch for snakes and take a first aid kit so
you will know how to provide first aid in case of a snakebite.
