Identify double displacement reactions amongst the following:

(i )2 KCl  PbI 2  2 KI  PbCl2

(ii )C  O2  CO2
(iii )CH 4  2O2  CO2  2 H 2O

answer:

A double displacement reaction is a type of reaction in which two reactants exchange to form new
compounds.
Example- AB  CD  AD  CB

From the given reactions:

(i )2 KCl  PbI 2  2 KI  PbCl 2
 
Hence, chloride ion (Cl ) is replaced by Iodide ( I ) ion and two new products are formed. Hence, it is
double-displacement reaction.

(ii)C  O2  CO2

In this reaction, carbon (C ) is combining with oxygen

(O2 ) to form carbon-dioxide. Hence, it is a
combination reaction.

(iii )CH 4  2O2  CO2  2 H 2O

In this reaction, methane gas is burned in the presence of oxygen to give carbon dioxide and water.
Hence, it is combustion reaction.

Hence,
2 KCl  PbI 2  2 KI  PbCl2 is a double displacement reaction.
