WORKSHEET

Note : To be done in the notebooks.

A. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: -

Q1. What is a chemical equation?
A1. A chemical equation is a statement that describes a chemical change in terms of
symbols and formulae. We represent a chemical change with the help of a chemical
equation. Eg : Hydrogen gas combines with Chlorine gas to form Hydrogen Chloride gas.
H2 + Cl2 → 2HCl
Q2. What is a balanced chemical equation?
A2. An equation in which the number of each atom of an element on the reactant side is
equal to the number of each atom of an element on the product side. Eg:
Mg + H2O → MgO + H2↑
Q3. What all things must be known to us to write a correct molecular formula?
A3. To write a correct molecular formula we should know:

 The symbols of the elements.

 The valency of the elements.
Q4. Mention the four types of Chemical reactions with one example each.
A4. The four types of chemical reactions are as follows:
1) Combination Reaction - A reaction in which two or more reactants combine to
form a product is called a combination reaction. Eg : Hydrogen and Oxygen
combine to form water.
2H2+O2→2H2O

2) Decomposition Reaction – A reaction in which a compound breaks up into two or

more simple substances due to the application of heat is called decomposition
reaction. Eg : Potassium chlorate on heating decomposes to form Potassium
chloride and Oxygen.

2KClO3 → 2KCl+3O2↑
3) Displacement Reaction – A reaction in which one element displaces another from
its compound and takes its place is called displacement reaction. For example :
Iron displaces copper from a solution of copper sulphate to form ferrous sulphate.
CuSO4 + Fe → FeSO4 + Cu

4) Double Decomposition Reaction – A reaction in which two compounds take part,

both are decomposed and two new compounds are formed by exchange of radicals
is called double decomposition reaction. Eg : When Sodium Chloride reacts with
silver nitrate, Sodium nitrate and Silver Chloride are formed.
NaCl + AgNO3 → NaNO3 + AgCl↓
Both the reactants are soluble in water. One of the products(NaNO3) is soluble in
water but the other AgCl is insoluble in water and forms a precipitate.
Q5. Giving a suitable example, discuss the rearrangement of atoms in a chemical change.
A5. During a chemical change atoms rearrange themselves to form new substances. They
do so in two ways.
1. Combination – In the formation of water from hydtrogen and oxygen, atoms of
hydrogen combine with atoms of oxygen to form water.
Eg : 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
2. Decomposition – If we decompose water, we get hydrogen and oxygen.
Eg : 2H2O → 2H2 + O2
According to the law of conservation of mass, matter can neither be created nor
destroyed. Thus, we can say that any new substance formed in a chemical change
is due to the rearrangement of the atoms of the original substances. The number
of atoms of each kind remains the same before and after the chemical change.
B. FILL IN THE BLANKS: -
i. The substances which react in a chemical reaction are called reactants.
ii. Chemical changes are represented by chemical equations.
iii. The substances which are formed during a chemical reaction are called products.
iv. According to the law of conservation of mass, matter can neither be created nor
destroyed.
C. BALANCE THE FOLLOWING EQUATIONS: -
Answers
i. H2 + Cl2 → HCl H2 + Cl2 → 2HCl
ii. NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O Already Balanced
iii. CaO + HNO3 → Ca(NO3)2 + H2O CaO + 2HNO3 → Ca(NO3)2 + H2O
iv. Ca + H2O → Ca(OH)2 + H2 Ca + 2H2O → Ca(OH)2 + H2
v. NH3 + Cl2 → NCl3 + HCl NH3 + 3Cl2 → NCl3 + 3HCl
