𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 → 𝑎(𝑥 + ℎ)2 + 𝑘 = 0
𝑏2
And: 𝑘 = 𝑐 − 4𝑎
Now we can see if we can turn our example into that form to discover h and k
𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 7
(𝑥 + ℎ)2 + 𝑘 → 𝑥 2 + 2ℎ𝑥 + ℎ2 + 𝑘
𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0
But that is easy to deal with, jus divide the whole equation by “a” first, then carry on:
𝑏 𝑐
𝑥2 + ( ) 𝑥 + = 0
𝑎 𝑎
Steps
Now we have something that looks like (𝑥 + 𝑝)2 = 𝑞 , which can be solved rather easily:
Example: Solve 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 1 = 0
Step 2- move the number term to the right side of the equation:
➔ 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 = −1
Step 3- complete the square on the left side of the equation and balance this by adding the
same number to the right side of the equation
𝑏 2 4 2
( ) = ( ) = 22 = 4
2 2
→ 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 4 = −1 + 4
→ (𝑥 + 2)2 = 3
(𝑥 + 𝟐)2 = 𝟑
Example: Solve 5𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 2 = 0
Step 1- Divide all terms by 5
➔ 𝑥 2 − 0.8𝑥 − 0.4 = 0
Step 2- Move the number term to the right side of the equation:
→ 𝑥 2 − 0.8𝑥 = 0.4
Step 3- Complete the square on the left side of the equation and balance this by adding the
same number to the right side of the equation:
𝑏 2 0.8 2
( ) = ( ) = 0.42 = 0.16
2 2
STEP 5- Subtract (-0.4) from both sides ( in other words, add 0.4):
