1. (a) A committee of 7 has to be formed from 9 boys and 4 girls. In how many ways can this be done
when the committee consists of:
i. exactly 3 girls?
ii. at least 3 girls?
iii. at most 3 girls?

(b) How many 3-digit numbers can be formed from the digits 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 assuming that
i. repetition of the digits is allowed?
ii. repetition of the digits is not allowed?

(a) The 7 cards include exactly 3 aces.
(b) The 7 cards include exactly 2 kings.
(c) The 7 cards include either 3 aces, 2 kings, or both.

3. Consider the following statements concerning the probabilities of two events, A and B :
P (A ∪ B) = 0.85, P (A | B) = 0.54, P (B) = 0.5

Determine whether the events, A and B , are:

(a) mutually exclusive.
(b) independent.

4. An urn contains 3 red and 5 green balls. 2 balls are selected from the urn without replacement.
Calculate the probability that:
(a) both balls are green.
(b) the second ball is green.

5. A chain of stores sells three brands of digital cameras. Of its sales, 50% are brand 1 (least expensive),
30% are brand 2 and 20% are brand 3 (most expensive). Each manufacturer oers a one year warranty
on parts and labour. It is known that 25% of brand 1 requires warranty repair work, whereas the
corresponding percentages for brand 2 and 3 are 20% and 10% respectively. If a customer returns to
the store with a camera that needs repair work, what is the probability that it is a brand 2 camera?
