Earthing:

The process of connecting the metallic frame (i.e. non-current carrying part) of electrical equipment or
some electrical part of the system (ex: neutral point in a star – connected system, one conductor of the
secondary of a transformer etc.) to earth is called grounding or earthing.

Metal rods were driven in to earth & non-current carrying metal parts of electrical apparatus were
connected to these rods called “electrodes”.

Objective of earthing:

Prime objective of earthing is to provide a zero potential surface in and around & under the area where
the electrical equipment is installed.

Earthing is essential at every stage of electricity generation, transmission and utilization.

Importance of earthing:

 Personal safety
 Protection of equipment
 Protection of system
 Improve reliability of power supply.
