India jumped to 63rd position among 190 nations in the rankings released in 2019. Sustained
business reforms after deliberation, over several years helped India climb up the ranks. The
latest reforms in India deals with Construction Permits of starting a business, resolving
insolvency and cross border trade. According to the WB, India conducted four major reforms
in a period of 12 months. The process for obtaining permits and authorizations was made
more efficient. The costs for the same came down from 5.7% to 4% of the warehouse value.
Authorities have enhanced building quality control by strengthening professional certification
requirements, a single digital platform has been opened for trade stakeholders to submit all
the necessary documents and the port infrastructure has also been improved. The biggest
jump has been made in the category of “resolving insolvency” (from 108 th to 52nd) followed
by a decent improvement in “dealing with construction permits” (from 52 nd to 27th) and “cross
border trading” (from 80th to 68th)

However, India still lags in areas like enforcing contracts (163rd rank) and registering
property (154th rank). India’s ranking has deteriorated in two categories, “protecting minority
investors" (from 7th to 13th position) and “getting electricity" (from 22nd to 25th).
