AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING (excerpts from e-learning resources)

Automotive Engineering is a branch of engineering discipline which studies the operating

principles of the of the automobiles by incorporating various elements of engineering such as mechanical,
electrical, electronic, software and safety engineering. The study of automotive engineering is to design,
develop, fabricate, and testing vehicles or vehicle components from the concept stage to production stage.
Automotive Engineers can design and test brake systems, safety mechanisms, fuel technologies
and transmission. In this field, engineers use design software to devise new vehicles designs or systems.
Some engineers also use grinders, machine tools and workshop presses to fabricate prototype parts for
testing. Individuals interested in designing, testing and creating automotive systems may be drawn to this
line of work. A graduate of mechanical engineering who intent to specialize in automotive engineering
will be exposed in applying the basic principles in engineering along with modern vehicle design
requirement in term of safety, fuel economy, and industrial manufacturing.

Automotive engineering is a complex and inter-disciplinary field, so students may also find
relevant course work with electrical engineering, environmental engineering and mechanical engineering.
Thus, automotive engineering is a combination of mechanical, electrical and materials science. Again,
engineer in this field can design new vehicles or look for ways to improve existing automotive

UNIT 1/2 :
Automotive Tools &
Equipment
INPUT

INTRODUCTION

Automotive tools and equipment are essential components in the study of automotive
engineering. Without these tools, it will be difficult to realize your designs and innovations.

There are varied automotive tools and equipment that were designs to perform different
tasks in automotive engineering technology. Development of new tools, equipment and
accessories are significantly influence the progress of automotive industry. Mechanical engineers
in this field of practice are opportunities to contribute for better safety standards that will lead
towards effective driving and road accidents. Establishing set of rules in the proper use of tools
and equipment as well as checklist to assure that all automotive maintenance and repair needs are
vital in effective data files for identifying tools designs and innovations.

It is therefore necessary for an engineer or any technical people to properly organize and
establish tool management for stock system innovations and safety standards.

ESSENTIAL TOOLS IN AUTOMOTIVE

There are to essential tools in Automotive namely:
1. Jack/Axle Stands
2. Fire Extinguisher
3. Wrench /Spanner: Hexagonal key, plier, and screw driver sets
4. Oil pan/drip pan and funnel
5. Trolley Jack
6. Wheel Chocks
7. Wheel/Lug wrench ( tire wrench)
8. Jumper Cables
9. Torch/ work light
10. Oil Filter wrench

DETAILS OF EACH ESSENTIAL TOOLS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. Jack/Axle Stands
The jack and axle stands should always be used when the car has been raised off the ground. These
additional supports ensure safety is always kept as a priority. Most cars will have factory-recommended
slots underneath the car for the axle stands to be used. Always read the instructions in your vehicles
ownership manual on how and where the stands can be used.
2.  Fire Extinguisher
When working in a garage on a vehicle, you are in an enclosed space with explosive liquid (fuel and gas),
an energy source (battery) and other flammable materials. For the safety of yourself, your working space
and your car, an extinguisher is a necessary safety item.

3. Wrench/Spanner, HEX Key, Plier and Screwdriver Sets
These sets of tools are not only common to be used on vehicles; they are also common household tools too.
These tools will be able to be used on many areas of the vehicle from the engine, panels to the interior of
the vehicle.
4. Oil Pan/Drip Tray and Funnel
Changing your vehicle’s oil is a common task that can be completed at home. Having a drip tray and
funnel, can help avoid any unnecessary mess or spills which can be hard to clean up!
5.  Trolley Jack
The easiest way to lift your car off the ground at home is with a trolley jack. Jacks can come in a variety of
weights and sizes. Always be sure to check which jack is best suited for your vehicle before purchasing.
Most vehicles will also have “jack points” under the car, this is where the car should be jacked up from.
6.  Wheel Chocks
They may seem unnecessary but wheel chocks are an important safety element. When the car has been
raised of the ground, chocks should be used to stop the car rolling dangerously backwards or forwards
(depending on where the car has been raised from).
7. Wheel/Lug Wrench (Tyre Iron)
A flat tyre is one of the most common issues drivers will have to face without their mechanic. Therefore
changing a wheel is a job that all drivers should be capable of completing. Using a wheel wrench is the
easiest way to undo the wheel nuts, and can often be found with the spare tyre in a vehicles boot.
8. Jumper Cables
Jumper Cables can get you out of the sticky situation of a flat battery and are quite simple to use. Jumper
cables are available in different sizes and strengths so before purchasing, be sure to check the cables
capacity to ensure it will suit your battery.
9.  Torch/Worklight
Having to work on your vehicle at night or in the dark is also a situation that often cannot be avoided.
Having a worklight or flashlight can help rectify these situations.
10.  Oil Filter Wrench
An oil filter wrench will make removing tough and stubborn oil filters a lot less difficult.

AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY
Below are some safety rules, policies, standards and practices based from e-learning resources. Are there
safety reminders or practices that you disagree in terms of reality?

SOME SAFETY REMINDERS:

 Always keep a torch in the car in the case of having to work on the car away from home at night.
 Keeping your tools clean and in good condition will help them to last a long time.
 Always use a jack on level and solid ground.
 When using a jack, be sure to use axle stands and wheel chocks.
 If unsure on how to use any of the tools or how to complete any specific jobs on a vehicle; be sure to seek
professional advice before beginning.
 Keeping tools well organized will help when trying to find the right tool. The last thing anyone wants is not
being able to find the right tool when they’re in a rush!

SAFETY RULES FOR AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOPS

Working on vehicles can be a fun, exciting, and rewarding career. However, repair shop
owners and their staff need to ensure the proper safety precautions and rules are implemented and
followed at all times. Safety measures help protect employees from accidental injuries to themselves,
their co-workers, customers, and the vehicles they are repairing. The following is a list of general
safety tips every repair shop should use to keep everyone safe.

 Never smoke in or near repair bays or garages. Vehicles contain flammable and combustible
fluids which can easily be set on fire if a hot ash from a cigar or cigarette were to come into
contact with such materials.
 Keep work areas clean and organized. Pick up tools and use tool cabinets to keep walkways
clear and free from clutter.
 Never wear loose clothing or clothing that is ripped or torn. To prevent employees from
wearing unacceptable attire, it is recommended to obtain customized uniforms and work
apparel from a qualified uniform service company.
 Wear protective gear at all times, as appropriate for the repair. Goggles, gloves, and ear
protection should be worn when making certain types of repairs.
 Make sure fire extinguishers are easily acceptable and appropriate for all potential fire types.
In the event of a fire, extinguishers need to be accessed quickly and be charged with the right
materials to put out the type of fire: i.e., gas, oil, electrical, and so on.
 Always disconnect the battery when working on electrical systems and near/around electrical
wiring. Even when the vehicle is off, there is still the potential for current to pass through
electrical wiring.
 Never place hands, tools, or other objects near the engine while it is running. The moving
parts and components could cause injury to a person or the vehicle itself.
 Never work underneath a vehicle unless it has been properly supported. Raising the vehicle
off the ground to access the underside requires verifying it is stable, and that there is no risk
of the vehicle falling on top of the mechanic.
 Always remove the keys from the ignition switch. Never leave the key in the ignition
switch, as the key can draw an electrical charge from the battery. Also, avoid
unplugging fuses and wiring harnesses while the key is in the “on” position.
Otherwise, there is a risk of electrical shock, and/or electrical spikes that may
damage electronic parts and wiring.
 Be aware of the vehicle’s temperature before beginning any work. The engine,
manifold, exhaust system, and radiator could be hot and cause skin burns. Plus, the
radiator coolant is still pressurized.
