(b) A stationary mass of a gas is compressed without friction (13) 3 1
from an initial state of 0.3m3 and 0.105MPa to a final state
of 0.15m3 and 0.105 MPa, the pressure remaining
constant during the process. There is a transfer of 37.6 KJ
of heat from the gas during the process. How much does
the internal energy of the gas change?

12. (a) Describe the carnot cycle and examine the carnot (13) 3 2
principles, idealized carnot heat engines, refrigerators and
heat pumps.
(OR)
(b) A water heater operates under steady flow conditions (13) 3 2
receiving 4.2 kg/s of water at 75oC temperature, enthalpy
313 KJ/Kg. the water is heated by mixing with steam
which is supplied to the heater at temperature 100.2 oC and
enthalpy 2676 KJ/Kg. The mixture leaves the heater as
liquid water at temperature 100 oC and enthalpy 419
KJ/Kg. How much steam must be supplied to the heater
per hour?

13. (a) Steam initially at 1.5MPa, 300oC expands reversibly and (13) 3 3
adiabatically in a steam turbine to 40oC. Determine the
ideal work output of the turbine per kg of steam.

and second Tds equations.
(OR)
(b) Explain Joule-Kelvin effect. What is inversion (13) 2 4
temperature?

15. (a) A certain gas has Cp=1.968 and Cv= 1.507 KJ/KgK. Find (13) 3 5
