I Scope
This specification, together with the Purchase Order, covers the minimum requirements
for steel check valves in accordance with API 594, Type A and Type B, for nominal
pipe sizes (NPS) 2 and greater for ASME Classes 150 through 2500:
Type ‘A’ check valves are short face-to-face: lug, or double flanged; single plate or
dual plate.
Type ‘B’ bolted cover swing check valves are long face-to-face: flanged or butt-
welding ends.
Unless otherwise specified, Valves covered by this specification shall be suitable for
wet, sour liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon services with design temperature between -18
and 400°C.
Additional requirements for special services are covered in the following appendices:
Appendix A Low temperature service from -19 to 45°C
Appendix B Cryogenic services from -46°C and below
Appendix C Steam services
Appendix D Pipeline service from -18 to 120°C
2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs) or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the Valves
Standards Committee Chairman (VSCC), Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the VSCC, Consulting Services Department of Saudi
Aramco, Dhahran.

V Modifications to API STD 594, Check Valves - Flanged, Lug, Wafer and
Butt-welding Ends
The following paragraph numbers refer to API STD 594, Seventh Edition,
September 2010, which is part of this specification. The text in each paragraph
below is an addition, exception, modification, or deletion to API STD 594 as noted.
Paragraph numbers not appearing in API STD 594 are new paragraphs to be inserted in
numerical order.
5 Design
5.1.18 (Addition) Type ‘A’ valves: The body shall be of a “retainerless” type
design, i.e., there shall be no threaded plugs in the pressure boundary.
5.1.19 (Addition) Type ‘A’ & Type ‘B’ valves: Refer to 04-SAMSS-035 for end
connections NPS 26 and above.
5.1.20 (Addition) Type ‘B’ valves: The area of the flow passage shall be at least
equal to the seat port area. For valves, NPS 2 through 24, the inside diameter
of the seat opening shall not be less than that specified in Annex A of
ASME B16.34 for the specified pressure class. For sizes greater than
NPS 24, the inside diameter shall be as agreed to between purchaser and
manufacturer.
5.3.1 (Addition) Type ‘A’ (single plate) & Type ‘B’ valves: The body seat ring
shall be inclined or the hinge shall have an offset.
