Assignment Directions:
This assignment will have students fill out a graphic organizer called a “tree chart.” In order for
students to fill out the tree chart, they must brainstorm individually or use the resources provided
to identify essential skills needed to be successful when playing a game of tennis. For example,
the essential skills for baseball players are throwing, catching, and hitting. After student’s
brainstorm, they will list three of those essential skills. For each of the three skills, students will
identify 3 critical elements (note: some skills have more than 3 critical elements, but you will
only need to provide 3) needed to perform the skill. For example, in order for a baseball player to
throw the ball, they must pull their arm back to a 90° angle and release with their arm “hitting
their back pocket.” To be complete, students will have a total of 3 skills and 9 critical elements in
the tree chart. When students have completed the tree chart, they will get into groups of 4 and
share their ideas with classmates. After students have collaborated and shared with classmates,
the teacher will pick and volunteer students to share their ideas aloud. After questioning the
students, the teacher will collect papers from students (this means you want to make sure you
have filled out the whole chart). After collecting the papers from students, the teacher will
lecture all skills and critical elements students may have missed.
