ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS

1.Which layer of soil provides shelter for many living organisms? (1)

Ans: Top layer of the soil provides shelter for many living organisms.
2.Name the soil in which percolation rate of water is highest ? (1)
Ans: Sandy soil has highest rate of water percolation.
3. Which soil is suitable for growing cereals like wheat and gram? (1)
Ans:Clayey and loamy soil is suitable for growing cereals like wheat and
gram.
4.What type of soil is used to make matkas? (1)
Ans:Black soil is used to make matkas.

5.What is humus? (1)

Ans:The rotting dead matter in soil is called humus.
6.What is soil profile ?Name the different layers of soil? (2)
Ans:The vertical section through different layers of soil is called soil
profile.
The different layers of soil are
A-horizon
B-horizon
C-horizon
Bedrock.
7.In a particular soil sample,it took 50minutes for 400 ml to percolate
Calculate the rate of percolation of water? (2) Ans:
400÷50=8ml/minute.
8.Compare the soil properties of sandy soil and clayey soil (3)
Ans: Clayey soil conditions of very fine particle where as sandy soil
consist of greater proportion of large particles.
Clayey soil has least rate of water percolation where as sandy soil has high
rate of water percolation.
Clayey soil has good water holding capacity where as sandy soil has least
water holding capacity.
Clayey soil is suitable for growing crops, where as sandy soil is not
suitable for growing crops.
9.Explain the process of soil formation (3)
Ans :Soil is formed by breaking down of rocks into smaller prices by the
action of water, wind and climate. This process of soil formation is called
weathering.
10.What is soil erosion? List any three causes of soil erosion.
List any two methods to prevent soil erosion (5)
Ans: Removal of top fertile layer of soil by the action of wind, water and
air is called as soil erosion.

The three ways of soil erosion are:

1. Cutting down of tress and forest.
2. Leaving the land without vegetation.
3. Over grazing of animals.
The two ways of preventing soil erosion are:
1. Plant more trees as roots of the trees bind soil together and prevent
soil erosion.
2. Avoid shifting cultivation.
