Please answer the following questions using Lesson page 1.06, save to your computer, and
submit to your teacher through Assessments.

1. Many Latin words closely resemble English words that you already know. Can you guess
what the following words mean?

Here is an example.
Europa = Europe

Italia = Italiy
Germania = Germany
Britannia= Britian
Paeninsula = peninsula

2. Other Latin words are the root of many words in the English language. We call these
English words Latin derivatives.

a. Magnify, magnificent, and magnitude are all derivatives of the Latin word “magna”.
Guess what the Latin word magna means? Look up in an English dictionary magnify,
magnificent, or magnitude if you need help.

i.) magna = great

b. The Latin word “aqua” means water. Find an English dictionary and look under 'aqua'
to find a list of possible derivatives. Give two English derivatives from aqua.

i.) Aquamaren
ii) aquarium

3. You will soon discover that Latin will help you with your English vocabulary. Now that
you know “insula” means island, if you saw the following question on a standardized test,
how would you answer it?

What individual is likely to be considered somewhat insular?

a. a football player
b. a teacher
c. a Hawaiian dancer
d. a nurse
