THE
PROFESSIONALIZATIO
N OF TEACHING
In the previous blogs we have talked about “You” as a teacher or
future teacher, what roles you must possess and how to become
a global teacher. This time we are going to level up… the first step
for you to become a professional teacher.
Let us know about the word profession first. What does really
profession means anyway?
A profession is a paid occupation, especially one that involves
prolonged training and formal qualifications.

When are we going to be called a professionals?

It is when you became qualified in a profession.

“How do I become qualified to be a professional?” – And this is the

question we are going to talk about in this blog. 
According to Burbules & Densmore, to become a professional, you
must have these characteristics.

 professional autonomy
 a clearly defined, highly developed, specialized, and theoretical
knowledge base
 control of training, certification, and licensing of new entrants
 self-governing and self-policing authority, especially with regard
to professional ethics
 and a commitment to public service
There have been policies and laws that were declared by different
states for a better quality education all over the world. But here I am
going to cite the Basic Laws on the professionalization of teaching
(in the Philippines)

“…in recognition of the vital role of teachers in nation-

building and as an incentive to raise the morale of teachers, it
is imperative that they be considered as professionals and
teaching be recognize as profession…” – The Teaching
Profession (Bilbao et al.)
Let’s start with the Presidential Decree No. 1006

PROVIDING FOR THE PROFESSIONALIZATION OF

TEACHERS, REGULATING THEIR PRACTICE IN THE
PHILIPPINES AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

This is also known as the “Decree Professionalizing Teaching”

It is a policy wherein the teacher education shall be given primary

concern and attention by the government and shall be of highest
quality, and strongly oriented to Philippine conditions and to the
needs and aspirations of the Filipino people even as it seeks
enrichment from adaptable ideas and practices of others.

It stated here that you must be a graduate of bachelor of education

and in able to be a professional teacher, you must take an
examination and must able to pass it to get a certification that will
legalize you as a professional teacher.

I know some people who failed taking the examination for teachers,
called LET, and was not able to teach full time. They do substitute
at times but always work under supervision. So I say that to be able
to pass the examination, you must be ready and equipped with
enough knowledge and skills to be finally called professionals.
