Let’s Do Things Which are Quite Different (3 options)

Option 1
A haiku poem has three lines, where the first and last lines have five syllables , and the middle
line has seven. The pattern in this Japanese genre is 5-7-5. The lines of such poems
rarely rhyme with each other.
● It contains 17 syllables in total.
● A Haiku poem does not rhyme.
● Haiku poems frequently have a kigo, or seasonal reference.
● Haiku poems are usually about nature or natural phenomena.
● The poem has two juxtaposed subjects that are divided into two contrasting parts.
● In English, this division between two parts can be shown by a colon or a dash.

Function of Haiku
Haikus are short poems written on topics and things that the readers can identify with easily.

P.S. I have read some awesome haiku-s on that small black board sign in front of Café Milano
near our school. I wish I had taken pictures. Just , you know…give it a shot .
Option 2

LIMERICK

=a humorous poem with five lines. The first line traditionally introduces a person and a

place, with the place appearing at the end of the first line and establishing the rhyme scheme for the
second and fifth lines

There was an Old Man with a Beard (By Edward Lear)

“There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, ‘It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!”
Edward Lear was considered to be the father of limericks
The simple rhythm and form are ideal for anyone inclined to write something silly. For instance,
Ron Rubin, expert versifier and jazz musician, wrote this one:
“There was an old drunkard of Devon,
Who died and ascended to Heaven;
But he cried: 'This is Hades-
There are no naughty ladies,
And the pubs are all shut by eleven.”
Or
There was a young lady of Nice,
Who insisted on bathing in grease.
She slid through the house
Tormenting her spouse
Til he hid in the oven for peace.
You may choose any topic (limericks were written about the Kardashians for example, by an
otherwise gifted and famous writer :Salman Rushdie)

The marriage of poor Kim Kardashian
Was krushed like a kar in a krashian.
Her Kris kried, 'Not fair!
Why kan't I keep my share?'
But Kardashian fell klean outa fashian.

OPTION 3
Choose a sound/ ordinary detail and…

Write a short poem (it does NOT have to rhyme) OR a very short narrative (50 -80 words)
based on that sound/detail (e.g. a cork from a champagne bottle) ( it does not automatically
imply mentioning the sound-if you were to choose it- you may as well make your writing
remind one of the sound of your choice or make one think about the sound)
