Expressing order of events


Prepositions:
on, before/after, for

Time expression:
a week ago, last month, earlier, this year, the week before, an hour later,
the next day

A week ago, I was not sure about my future.

Time clause:
Clause = idea
After, before, when
After we spoke, she decided to stay.
After we had spoken, she decided to stay.
Before I ate, I cooked.
Before I ate, I had cooked.
Before I ate, I had been cooking for two hours.
When we met, she had been studying at my university for one year.

Conjunctions:
And, but, or, so, yet
• Tom is singing, and Paul is dancing.
• Tom is tall, but Paul is short.
• Tom must write a letter, or Paul will do it.
• Tom told a joke, so Paul laughed.
• Tom is tired, yet he is not going to sleep.

Subordinators
Although, though, while, whereas, because, since
We use subordinators in a complex sentence when we have a dependent
and an independent clause.

Examples:
Even though I finished early, they did not accept my project.
Although it was cold, I went swimming.
Though it was Sunday, I decided to work.
While I was cooking, my friend was writing her novel.
Whereas I was reading, she was watching tv.
Because I was late, we could not start the meeting.
Since you did not send me the paper, I could not finish the project.

Relative clauses = adjective clause


Relative Pronouns: That, who, which, where, when

He is the man that I talked to yesterday.


A mariachi is someone who sings traditional Mexican songs.
That is the church where my parents got married.
