Quiz On The Odyssey
The cyclops is not afraid of Zeus and other Gods because he believes that his race is stronger
than them (page 117, lines 276-278), he calls Odysseus foolish for trying to bargain with him
hospitality by threatening him with Zeus: “The champion of suppliants and guests” (page 117,
lines 270-271). The Cyclops also reveals that he would never spare Odysseus and his men from
death out of fear of these Gods unless he felt like it (page 117, lines 278-279). Moreover, it is
later revealed that Polyphemus is actually the son of the God Poseidon (page 123, lines 519-
520). I believe that the Cyclops sees himself as the most powerful being to ever exist because
since the beginning of time Gods were always looked up as the all-powerful, the champions of
the world and humans prayed for their mercy and feared them. In this case Odysseus wants to
reason with Polyphemus by planting fear of Zeus into his mind and to his surprise it did not
work. “…. You must be a fool or must have come from very far afield….” (Page 117, lines 274-
275) here the Cyclops claims that Odysseus must be delusional, crazy or just from a very far land
which indicates that maybe the Gods are not the most powerful after all, maybe everyone thinks
that no being can surpass the Gods but Polyphemus declares proudly that he is more powerful
than all of them. In conclusion it seems that Polyphemus has revealed something important that
may put doubt in the minds of people, if anyone knows of the power of the Cyclops they may
start doubting the power of the Gods seeing that another being is more powerful than them but
there is no evidence that supports it, we just have to take Polyphemus’s words for it that the
God’s powers are inferior to his. In my opinion Polyphemus may be more powerful in terms of
strength only as each God has his own attributes and skills (Thor: God of thunder, Poseidon: God
of sea) thus if the Cyclops were to battle his father Poseidon on land he might win but if the
