Mopho anatomy of Lactobacillus acidophilus

Scientific classification
Phylum: Firmicutes
Class: Bacilli
Family: Lactobacillaceae
Genus: Lactobacillus
Species: L. acidophilus
Function:
Lactobacillus acidophilus (whose name, from Latin, means acid-loving milk-bacterium) is a
species of bacteria in the genus Lactobacillus. L. acidophilus is ahomofermentative species,
fermenting sugars into lactic acid, and grows readily at rather low pH values (below pH 5.0) and
has an optimum growth temperature of around 37 °C (99 °F).L. acidophilus occurs naturally in
the human and animal gastrointestinal tract and mouth. Some strains of L. acidophilus may be
considered to have probiotic characteristics. These strains are commercially used in many dairy
products, sometimes together with Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii
subsp. bulgaricus in the production of acidophilus-type yogurt.

Benefits:
Produces lactase, the enzyme that breaks down the sugar in milk. (People who are lactose
intolerant don't produce this enzyme.)
Prevents and treats diarrhea.
Reduces overgrowth of pathogens in your digestive tract.
Relieves Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn's disease, and gut dysbiosis.
Decreases frequency of vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections.
Increases your immune response.
May treat respiratory infections like sinusitis and bronchitis

Disadvantage: Lactobacillus generally does not have side effects when consumed in small
quantities. Allergies to Lactobacillus can cause swelling of the face, mouth, tongue or lips. It can
cause a rash or itching, or the person may experience chest tightness or breathing difficulties.
Lactobacillus, on rare occasions, has also been linked to heart valve infections, as well as
serious infections in immune compromised people. It is not recommended for pregnant women
because its effect on pregnancy is not well established.

Advantage: Lactobacillus is used for treating and preventing diarrhea, including infectious
types such as rotaviral diarrhea in children and traveler's diarrhea. It is also used to prevent and
treat diarrhea associated with using antibiotics.

Habitat: This bacterium can be found in animal and human intestinal tracts (for humans it is
found in the gastrointestinal tract), soil, water, milk and milk products, plants, silage, and
manure.  It is a known fact that Lactobacillus bacteria reproduce very quickly, doubling their
population every 20 minutes, at the temperature of approximately 32*C (90*F).
