Instructions
TLA9 (CO2)

For Category 1, 2 and 3 students:

Make the graph using a graphing paper and write your answers in a one whole yellow paper.

Part I.

Create a frequency distribution graph using the figure below. The x-axis the size range of particles in mm
while the y-axis is the number of particles in that range.

Steps:

1. Divide the picture below into 4 equal parts by drawing the horizontal and vertical midlines.

2. From each quadrant, choose 5 particles randomly spaced to get a representative sample.

3. Measure the Feret’s diameter of each particle using a ruler in millimeters.

4. List the diameters of the 20 particles that you have chosen.

5. Write a range from 0 mm to the largest diameter that you have measured and count the number of
particles that fit each range.

6. Draw the frequency distribution graph.

7. Finally, add all the diameters of the 20 particles and divided by 20 to get the average particle size.

Output:

1. Table of Feret’s diameter of the 20 particles (10 pts)

2. Frequency Distribution Table (10 pts)

3. Average Particle Size (5 pts)

Part II.

Answer the questions below by performing the calculations for Particle Size Distribution using Analytical
Sieving. Reference: USP <786> Particle Size Distribution Estimation by Analytical Sieving (20 pts)

Sieve No. Mesh Size (μm)

20 850
40 425
60 250
80 180
100 150

Weight of sample (before sieving): 25.5 g

Time
Mesh Size Weight of sieve (g) 5 min 10 min % change
(20) 850 μm 376.5 385.2 384.9 (a)
(40) 425 μm 366.3 377.9 378.1 (b)
(60) 250 μm 340.8 343.9 344.0 (c)
(80) 180 μm 332.5 333.5 333.4 (d)
Base 340.3 341.4 341.2 (e)
Solve for the %change for each sieve (a-e). Then answer the questions below.

1. Which sieves (including the base) contain less than 5% of the total sample?

2. Which sieves (including the base) reached the endpoint?

3. Assuming that all sieves (including the base) reached the endpoint, is the analysis valid in term of the
total losses?

4. What is the disposition of the sample? (PASSED or FAILED)

5. What is the next action based on your answer in the previous number?
