I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Education is vital in forming every community member’s social self. In

essence, society educates its members to ―behave in such a manner that it

desires; hence, the institutionalization and formal implementation of education.

Presently, the formal education institutionalized in Philippine society is

highlighted as it takes on the challenge of the conservation of our culture in the

midst of technological innovations impacting both local and global communities.

As with the rest of the world, electronic book (e-book) technology has already

started to make inroads into the Philippine educational system’s teaching and

learning processes (De Luna, T., 2015).

The use of technology in schools continues to evolve rapidly as new

devices and tools become available, and the adoption of mobile devices has

been a particularly exciting development in recent years. The benefits offered by

these technologies, such as their portability, connectivity, accessibility and range

of media, present new challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning.

(Caldwell & Bird, 2015).

A book composed in or converted to digital format for display on a

computer screen or handheld device is called an eBook while module is defined

as any series of standardized units for use together: such as an educational unit

which covers a single subject or topic. (Meriam-Webster Dictionary).

A study conducted in the rural schools in Indonesia aimed to test the use

of eBooks and printed books showed that there is an influence of teaching

materials on the students’ learning outcomes. Furthermore, it showed that the

PR_SDRC_Action Research 1
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ZAMBOANGA DEL
SUR
learning outcomes of the students who used eBooks were higher than those

using printed books. (Santoso, B., Siswandari, S., Sawiji, H., 2018).

In another study in the University of Batangas, Batangas City, Philippines

conducted by Ramirez, M.R. and Mercado, J. N. (2019), it aimed to assess the

use of eBook as an instructional material in Science learning among junior high

students with the end purpose of developing activities that will enhance the

teaching-learning process. The study determined the usefulness of e-book in

improving student’s achievement, study habits and acquired skills.

In Nilo National High School, the school will be adopting Modular Distance

Learning (MDL) as one of the available learning modalities prescribed in DepEd

Order No. 12, s. 2020 entitled “Adoption of the Basic Education Learning

Continuity Plan for School Year 2020-2021 in Light of the COVID-19 Public

Health Emergency”. MDL involves individualized instruction that allows learners

to use Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) in print or digital format, whichever is

applicable in the context of the learner, and other learning resources like

learner’s materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study

materials. Learners access electronic copies of learning materials on a personal

computer (PC), tablet PC, or smartphone. CDs, DVDs, USB storage, and

computer-based applications can all be used to deliver e-learning materials,

including offline eBooks. The teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the

progress of the learners. The learners may ask assistance from the teacher via

email, telephone, text message/instant messaging, etc. Where possible, the

teacher shall do home visits to learners needing remediation or assistance. Any

member of the family or other stakeholders in the community need to serve as

para-teachers.

Nilo National High School will be observing general health and safety

protocols to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection and will be following a strict

schedule during distribution and retrieval of SLMs as stipulated in Division

Memorandum No. 263, s. 2020 entitled “Adoption of Modified Class Programs on

Learning Delivery Modalities for Kindergarten, Grades 1 to 10”.

In this Action Research, I will be comparing the effectivity between printed

module and eBook on students’ learning outcome in TLE Handicraft (Fashion

Accessories) Grade 10.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This action research attempts to measure the difference, in terms of

effectiveness, between the use of printed module and eBook in teaching TLE

Handicraft (Fashion Accessories) Grade 10 in Nilo National High School SY

2020-2021, particularly, it answers the questions that follow:

1. What is the level of learning outcome of TLE Handicraft (Fashion

Accessories) Grade 10 students during pre-test, in terms of;

a. Printed Module

b. eBook

2. What is the level of learning outcome of TLE Handicraft (Fashion

Accessories) Grade 10 students during post-test, in terms of;

a. Printed Module

b. eBook

PR_SDRC_Action Research 3
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ZAMBOANGA DEL

3. Is there a significant difference between the learning outcomes

between students using printed module and students using eBook?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

This study will center on comparing the effectiveness between the use of

printed module and eBook in teaching TLE Handicraft (Fashion Accessories)

Grade 10 in Nilo National High School.

In a DepEd Press Release dated July 1, 2020, it states that “Steadfast in

its preparation for School Year 2020-2021, the Department of Education (DepEd)

will provide Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) with the alternative learning delivery

modalities to be offered for various types of learners across the Philippines. The

integration of SLMs with the alternative learning delivery modalities (modular,

television-based, radio-based instruction, blended, and online) will help DepEd

ensure that all learners have access to quality basic education for SY 2020-2021

with face-to-face classes still prohibited due to the public health situation. “The

SLMs and the other alternative learning delivery modalities are in place to

address the needs, situations, and resources of each and every learner and will

cover all the bases in ensuring that basic education will be accessible amid the

present crisis posed by COVID-19,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said.

The printed module will be in MS Word of PDF format while the eBook will

be developed using Kotobee Author v1.6.5. Both will be in accordance with the

competency found in the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in TLE

Handicraft (Fashion Accessories) Grade 10, specifically, LO1: Trace the history &

development of fashion accessory production (TLE_HEHC9-12FA-Ia-b-1) and

LO2: Select materials, tools and equipment in making fashion accessories

PR_SDRC_Action Research 4
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ZAMBOANGA DEL
SUR
(TLE_HEHC9-12FA-Id-3), which is intended to run for a 2-week duration. One (1)

printed module and one (1) eBook for every competency per week.

Electronic books (eBooks) are becoming increasingly popular. Their

advantages include; easier distribution, simple backup and storage, the ability to

adjust font size, add text to multimedia, and read on different devices. Rapid

development of mobile technologies is present not only in technical side but also

in educational side. Besides the notion of e-learning it is also introducing the

notion of m-learning, which also emphasizes usage of mobile technological

means in the educational process. Educating institutes should adapt their

methods of teaching for mobile technologies, which will bring students better

choices of learning means. (Fojtik, R., 2015).

This study will support the mandate of the Department of Education in

ensuring learners’ continued access to quality education in Nilo National High

School amidst the current pandemic. In addition, it will serve as a benchmark for

teachers on which of the SLMs yields better learning outcomes.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

A. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

The participants in this action research will be sixty (60) Grade 10

students in Nilo National High School, Nilo, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur during

the School Year 2020-2021. Students will be grouped into two (2); students

belonging to Group A or the control group will be using printed modules and will

be selected through simple random sampling. On the other hand, Students

PR_SDRC_Action Research 5
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ZAMBOANGA DEL
SUR
belonging to Group B or the experimental group will be using an eBook and will

be selected through purposive sampling technique from the target population.

This study will employ quantitative research method and will apply

experimental research design because the researcher will be seeking the

difference between printed module and eBook, in terms of their effectiveness, in

the learning outcome in TLE Handicraft (Fashion Accessories) Grade 10.

Table 1 below shows the criteria of population and sample population in

the conduct of this research.

Table 1. Criteria of Population and Sample Population

TLE 10 Students Population Sample Population
Group A (Control) 119 30
Group B (Experimental) 119 30
Total 119 60

B. Data Gathering Methods

The researcher will seek permission from the School Principal of Nilo

National High School to conduct the experimental research to the identified

participants of the said school. After securing the permit, the experiment will be

conducted.

Firstly, Group A will be supplied with printed modules while Group B will

be given copies of the eBook on their smartphones. Distribution and retrieval of

the Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) will be scheduled every Friday of the week as

per Division Memorandum No. 263, s. 2020 entitled “Adoption of Modified Class

Programs on Learning Delivery Modalities for Kindergarten, Grades 1 to 10”. Our

school will be adopting this and teachers will be grouped into six (6) to cover the

PR_SDRC_Action Research 6
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ZAMBOANGA DEL

barangays where our students reside, namely; Nilo, Upper Nilo, Busol,

Maragang, Lacupayan, and Diana Countryside. For the first two (2) weeks,

teachers will be personally distributing the SLMs to the students’ residence.

Secondly, a pre-test will be administered to both groups and the results will be

collected. Thirdly, students will be instructed to read the SLMs. Lastly, a post-test

will be administered to both groups a week after and the results will be collected.

The same assessment tool will be used in the pre-test and post-test in

both groups. There will be two (2) sets of printed modules and eBooks provided,

one (1) for each week. Also, there will be two (2) pre-tests and two (2) post-tests

administered because the evaluated competency has a duration of two (2)

weeks.

C. Data Analysis Plan

This study will treat the data using paired t-test to determine the significant

difference between the two sets of data. The Mean Percentage Score (MPS) of

the pre-test and post-test of the control and experimental groups will be

computed and compared to determine the difference of effectiveness between

printed module and eBook on the learning outcome of students. This study will

show which of the SLMs yielded better results.
