Big City Blues

Stress in the City

link between social strain and mental illness
the more urban their home environment, the more engaged their amygdala became
- danger sensor, “fight or flight
- modulates emotions (ex.fear)
- hyperactivity in depression and anxiety
- overstimulation → violence

Urban Upbringing
most time growing up in cities showed the highest levels of pACC ( perigenual anterior cingulate
cortex) activity under pressure
- serves to inhibit activity in the amygdala
increased genetic risk for mood disorders but are not mentally ill

Lean on Me
The longer a person lives in a city, the less communication occurs between their amygdala and
pACC
Volume of amygdala increases with the size of a person’s circle of friends
Vasopressin- released during moments of bonding, reduces activity in areas of the cingulate
cortex, including the pACC, and boosts feedback to the amygdala

Causes:
close network of friends and family can insulate us from the most damaging effects of stress
lack of green space, noise

Solution: design our cities so that they promote emotional well-being to prevent serious
emotional disorders
